[Rusty the Scoob]

I'm sending my EB0 to Cliff at Shark Inlay for headstock restoration. Me being me, I can't just leave it as it was, of course, so I want to do something different where the little fan logo thing was right in the center.

Here is how it looks now, as I bought it:



Here are my ideas so far:



The full bear might be ruled out by practicality - could be breakage problems especially in the face, according to Cliff.





Maybe a real subtle sun radiating out from either of the two round ones, done in contrasting ebony - would be a very subtle touch that echoes the psychedelic sun paintjob that it's going to get.



All would be in regular inlay materials, not bright primary colors as shown. Any other ideas?

The bolt or the SYF, although while I was looking at them I thought if you refinished the headstock you could have "Rusty the Scoob" in script letters ala PRS now that would be cool! Just thinking out loud.

The SYF was the one that visually fit IMHO. I second the rusty the scoob suggestion.

I'm leaning against personalizing this one since it's meant to be as pure of a clone as possible of Phil's bass, with just a few subtle differences. Also it doesn't feel right to put my silly screen name on something that's 5-6 years older than I am, you know?

I understand. I'm working on with Rice guitars for a custom and am just doing 1 thing: Greek Key on the 12th fret.

That's what I was thinking. Something simple that means something to you but that isn't horribly overt

Personally, I don't like any of those mock-ups. If your trying to "clone" Phil's bass as you say, then clone it. Use exacly what Phil used. But other than a deliberate clone, I've never been fond of using someone els's iconographry to represent "me". How about a simple abalone/pearl stand alone lightning bolt. Or something that can be interpreted as Dead by those in-the-know, but also something that just looks cool to the average joe.
And realize that making any significant mod like this, and this is significant, will ruin any vintage value the bass may have.

Totally agree, except the value is already gone. See how it's stripped in the first pic? The entire bass was stripped like that. I'm baffled as to why it was done... but it made it fairly cheap to buy (about $550 IIRC) and makes it a perfect start to this project. Even fully and accurately restored or original EB0s are nowhere near the value of Fenders from the same era.


As far as representing me - I already have a bass that represents me, at least to a point: http://www.fennario.us/dancgear.html If you look closely at the headstock there's my last name on the bottom corner. I designed it and my dad built the body and finished it.

A bomb is not a bad idea. This thing will be dropping some, that is for sure. What would a Brown Note look like? The only idea I have isn't pretty

A bomb might be close to a firecracker which was used by a certain extended family member of the GD, IIRC.

The bomb I'm picturing is more like this, but a little more stubby in shape and without the political message. Most of the ones I've found have looked like cherry bombs - but this is the kind that you drop.

It's not a bad idea at all. I might use this in a future project. I have a lot of basses in mind, plus custom speaker cabs. It'd be a cool symbol to put on the 15" cab that I want to build. I'll save the brown note for if I ever get another 18" speaker.
