To me it's inappropos to tell someone who's playing at best small venues with a Bassman that "you don't need overdrive or compression because Jerry sounded fine guitar into amp." I said it before but I think my point continues to be overlooked so I'll repeat it. Fender amps are not designed to sound their best at 1-3 on the volume knob. They really come to life at 4 or higher. If your amp is a DR, at 4, you're at small club volume. With a Bassman you're not. However, Bassman amps, in my experience, take pedals well even at lower volumes. This point underlies my prior response and I'm stickin' with it!
