Just got a new CD (whole show) of the GD from 10-9-80 Warfield and Brent is WEILDING on Stranger to open the second set....first set is acoustic (of course) and worth checking out for the Cassidy and Birdsong acoustic jams. Pretty good stuff. Jerry is enfuego in this show.

I've been listining to the Dead Fall '71-74 and there's some really good stuff in there. I also found my copy of Garcia and have been loving that too, all those songs are really good even the weird ones.

Hitting up the Dick's Pick from Lincoln,NE and Salt Lake 1973. Great stuff. Plus "Stepping Out"- the assortment of British shows and songs. Also the Dicks Picks from Alexandria Palace in Britain. These 3 have just finished rotation in my car.
Really diggin the Paul Kanter and Slick albums Sunfighter(yes-I like that stuff)and The Ballad of the Chrome Plated Nun.(real good album)I believe both have touches of Jerry here and there.

It is a specific show from the run at the Warfield. All the shows from RadioCity Music hall and the Warfield are pretty similar in that they have an acoustic opening set and then 2 electric sets as I'm sure you're aware. This show inparticular is a very clean sdb from my buddy in my band---I don't know where he got it from---but it's the best sounding show from that run I've ever heard. I only had 3 whole shows from those 2 runs on cassette and they are decent but this CD is very clean. I don't think those runs were in circulation as much as they couldda been--that goes for all of 80 in my experience. He gave it to me before we played an acoustic set at our last gig---I think he was hoping listening to Brent would help my playing on the acoustic stuff---a subtle little hint I guess.

as I said above the Birdsong, Cassidy and especially the Stranger are excellent. Everything is played well at least.
I love the way Jerry and Brent are soloing together in Stranger. Brent's using an analogue synth patch that is (IMHO) very cool and they're playing off and around each other as well as you'd ever want to hear.
The whole show is great and based on the banter from Bob, it's a hometown show that they sound like they're really getting off and having a blast.

I just finished reading "Dark Star" and didn't realize what a huge role Merl Saunders played in Jerrys personal and preofessional life. It seems Jerry got an enormous amount of satisfaction from working with Merl. I used to have a record with After midnight on it...maybe keystone? God it was a long time ago.

What do you all recommend for someone who wants to get their Merl on ? Legion of Mary ?

Yeah Legion of Mary...I have a Bootleg of them from the Bottom Line Club NYC 4-9-75 Sound quality is awful though.
There's the released Keystone sessions from 73 and 74- these 2 represent a big slice of music from those guys. Ones from the Pure Jerry release. The other is a release from Fantasy records.(7/73) This one is slightly better in my opinion. These 2 sets are 6 discs. There is also the Rhino release
The Jerry Garcia Collection "Legion of Mary". This has an assortment of shows from 74-75
As far as I know Legion of Mary differs from Saunders Garcia in that LOM has Martin Fierro on Sax and Flute- and can be a little more Jazzy.
No actually I'm reading the liner notes-The Band went by Legion of Mary officially with Ron Tutt on drums. It's always an ambigious line-up really- in context to what the "band" was calling itself.
One things for sure, John K was always the Bassist.

Just listened to that a few days ago and I'd reccomend getting it if you can. Very good stuff. Merle's playing some really vintage keyboards---still sounds great to this day.
There's also a large amount of high quality bootlegs out there. Just gotta poke around.

Not to threadjack the thread, and I am sure I've mentioned this before here, but in 2001 I was at Jorma's Fur Peace Ranch with my buddy. He was taking the keys class with Merl, I was taking Jorma's class for the second time but I spent much of the weekend working with Merl and the keys players as their guitar player. Jorma was totally cool with it, he could tell I was just really pumped to work with Merl.

I could go on and on about the weekend, playing "Keepers" and "Strugglin' Man" with him, but I'd rather just say that Merl was easily one of the nicest, most genuine, and coolest guys I've ever met. We kept in touch via email once in a while. I was really saddened when he had his stroke and when he passed away last year or so we lost a great one, and yeah, he was one of Jerry's best friends and was also one of the guys Jerry leaned on when he came out of the coma.

Find some bootlegs from Legion of Mary era that have Merl singing "I'm a Jealous Guy", just awesome stuff.

You know my favorite JGB release is Kean College 1980. I like the Hunter Bits on the end...2-3 songs. But that Kean College is smokin'.
I don't have too many boots. I just buy releases and Dicks and such...even then my collection is pretty hearty. It has rotation potential. And it's always growing. 77 box set is on the way.
Yeah..I thought I checked Amazon...I'll look again sometime. Even my Buddy had made mention of the missing Vol.2.
