I was just listening to Boston music hall 12/2/73 (Dicks Picks 14 and theres a good aud on the archive)
and when they enter the jam in Playin in the Band they play this little jazzy groove that is incredibly cool (its from 2:57-3:20) but Jerry kinda changes gears and goes in a different direction


another example is Madison Square Garden 3/9/81, at the end of Stella Blue Jerry plays this little riff that could turn out neat but Bobby instead goes into Good Lovin

anyone else ever feel like this?

Everytime I listed to Fish i got that feeling. Their organized improv, and scale breaks were always buzzkills.

Sometimes its funny to hear say Bobby playing something and then say Phil hears it and thinks Bobby is pushing it somewhere and starts to go there too, then maybe the drummers start that direction too but before you know it Bobby is doing something different and playing off Jerry since he wasn't trying to go anywhere in the first place he was just jamming!

Or when you hear the battle of the "what's next" with a couple members trying to push it in one direction or another but nobody being dominant.

But yes, most times I get sad by "the jam that coulda been."

I have no complaints whatsoever about the 12/2/73 Playin'!!

But I love the "what's next" jam, especially when the conflicts pop up...

There's one Space where Jerry is busting a move for Stella, and Phil seems to go slightly apeshit, and blasts Jerry's intro attempts into spacedust...I think Jerry still wound up getting his Stella though.

I love the "what's next jams". Most of the time you can guess whats coming like in case of Franklin's, if you assume the next few songs are Estimated followed by Eyes followed by Drums, you'll probably be right.
Its good when you're wrong though. There is a show where they jam out of Bertha into this really spacey(for the lack of a better word) and relaxed jam and then burst(once again, lack of a better word) into China Doll.

I find Phish's jams a bit dissapointing though, they don't seem to go anywhere. 10 minutes into Bathtub Gin and suddenly the whole thing ends and you're wondering what was the point of it all...if you know what I mean.

Why does Phish keep coming into the discussion?

Why not take a break and slam SCI's "happy happy joy joy...careful- don't play anything dark or scary!" jamming style for a while? If you look in today's RUKIND news you'll see they are the "heirs to the jam throne". Bill Nershi says he was never a Deadhead- then what the hell was he doing onstage at the Comes A Time tribute ?

Nershi is just one man in the group. What he says doesnt go for the whole band. He coulda been an Old and in the Way-head for all we know. Makes sense to me.

It's making me mad how everyone is slamming Nershi for that. If he has little or no Dead influence, and he's the lead-man in a band like SCI, he's def. got something going for him.

Plus, I love Phish and SCI. But I highly recommend not bringing them into the forums. Neither band, although they are jam-bands, sound like the Dead at all. The only way I thought the two bands were in any way related to the Dead (besides the cover songs) was how they picked up the Heads when Jerry died. 2 new bands for the heads to tour with.

to tell you the truth mostly when they jam all I hear or focus on is Jerry . . . but sometimes I really do love it when in the middle of a jam Jer will slip into something dark star and then just fall back into whatever he was doing before. . . there are also those times where I am really diggin them riffing and then they go back into the verse and Im so disappointed, sometimes I wish the jams would never end

I was listening to Anthem of the sun today in my car. I was listening to Alligator when they were jamming coming out of the drum solo. A couple minutes into the jam, during one of the live clips that they would throw in during different parts of Anthem, Jerry goes into this quick little solo. The sound of his guitar is amazing, and the riff he's playing is even better! It's much too short though. The second it's finished, they go back to the studio sound and start shouting the "ALLIGATOOOORRR!" stuff.

I know their are hundreds of concerts where that has happened. But that park of Alligator on Anthem really amazes/bums me out, and it came to my head first.

P.S.-Does anyone know what shows were used when they threw in the live stuff in different parts of Anthem?

In '69 especially the Hard to Handle jams always end way too early.
