Hello! My band had a try at track recording, and it actually went pretty well okay maybe not. Problem is that it seems I'm not getting the right tone of the instruments. The piano and drums and bass sounded just fine but it seems the Guitars and Vocals seem to flat. I tried spicing the Vocals up with a little reverb and it only did so much.. I think it sounds too straight forward.. (Do you get what I'm saying?). When the Vocals jump in it sounds almost strange because they are plain.
Also we just did improv jams, because well we are JAM band

I was using an SM-57 to record the instruments and an SM-58 for the vocals through a Digital Multitracker MR-8.

For instruments you need to find the sweet spot for mic placement.

For vocals maybe you need to work up the EQ'ing.

If the vocals seem to pop, in a bad way, your overall non-vocal mix is off.

Ah, Next time I will run it through the PA system and Mic that since the mixer has the EQ's.

Will the sound be more like it is live with the correct placement of the Mic? Because if you hear my thing at the end, it didn't sound like that - it was less Strat sound. (Yes I am using a strat. middle pickup) I put the mic in between the 2 speakers about a foot from it.

Yes. I use a Sennhieser e609. Flush up against the grille clothe, at about 2 o'clock, on axis, just outside the dustcover.

I was standing about 20' in front of my amp with the main about 15' in front of me. The soundguy was going volume up, volume down and I was moving in front of the main and then in front of my amp at 20' feet out and it sounded the almost the exact same.
