Playing an American Std. Tele through a Fender Princeton Chorus, and using a Boss GT-8.

I’m still “searching for the sound,” and take more time doing that than actually playing.

I’m looking for advice on how to get that Jerry sound – but with a GT-8. I opted for this because you get multiple effects (granted I understand a touch wah on the Gt-8 or DOD Envelope is not the same as a Mutron III).

Anyone played around with a GT-8 to get a Jerry sound? Would love to hear from ya. Don’t leave me out in the cold, rain and snow!

Download the "Jerry Patch" firmware from Boss.

Bur seriously, what defines "the Jerry Sound"...his sound in the sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties? For many years Jerry just plugged into a twin with a Gibson or a Strat before custom guitars and heavily modified rigs and he always had that Jerry Sound.
I think you have to get the knack of the Jerry Style of playing guitar as the first step towards getting the Jerry Sound.

I've been playing through a Line 6 POD for years and have slowly shelved most if not all my pedals in favor of it. I never played a through a Boss GT-8 so not sure how the two compare but this how I get a sound I like on the POD:
Set the output up high on the POD so that my amp is at 2-3.
Use a tube preamp as the model amp (if you have one on that)
Add a a little bit of delay.
Throw in just a touch of gain
Set my bass down low, about 2

Other factors to consider
I play through a Fender solid state reverb amp. The tube preamp setting on the pod gives me that tube tone I like otherwise I would toss my amp in favor of a tube amp. I do like the reverb on it and use my fender amp reverb instead of the POD. I have never played your amp but I have never played through or heard a chorus amp that I liked.
If you have not done so, try heavier strings with a heavy pick.
Also you may need to add more gain or compression if playing a strat, not enough sustain for me.
My Jerry tone gets better every year. Two biggest factors are changing my guitar to a Schecter C1 classic (great sustain and love the tone on those low notes) and my playing and touch has improved, thanks in part to this group.

Thanks Ronster. I don't have a tube preamp out - it would make that much easier to select. The Boss has about 16-20 preamp choices - they push the JC-120 as a preamp choice. I believe this is a solid state with a good tube sound... will have to do more research tonight.

How about effects? I've tried the TOUCH WAH but can't seem to get it right - either polarity. I think Jerry plays the MUTRON with an up polarity (increasing tone by pick sensitivity). However, I think when he hits chords they are not affected. So you have a sound that starts at low tone, and for picking this works, but the chords should have high tone. My current option is not using the touch wah (which is disappointing ) and using a FOOT WAH.

As far as other effects, anyone have experience using OCTAVE, RESONATOR, TREMOLO, or COMPRESSOR?

Interestingly, I arrived at basically the same setup on my X3 Live and was very surprised to hear how much I liked it (the American Classic preamp model). I also ran it through a solid state amp into JBL E120s. Sounded much better than I expected.

I noticed in the GT-8 manual that there's a model for a Fender Twin. Have you tried messing with that as a starting point?

I'd avoid using a preamp into another preamp. That kills alot of the tonal potentail from GT or L6s IMO.

Yes...I do the same. Meant to say that I go from the preamp model into the power section of my combo amp, so I do bypass the preamp.

Am plugging right into the effex imput on my amp - bypassing the Fender preamp.

I used to play with a guy who had one of these, they are fun little things. He could get some pretty cool sounds out of it, he said the key was just to be patient and to just try the different patches and tweek them to what sounds good to you.

IMO, the drawback on alot of these modellors is ears and laziness. I was guilty of this too.

Work with me here.

You setup all your patches at home and they all sound fantastic in your jam area at home volumes.

Then you show up a rehearsal and much louder volumes and everything is off a bit.
So you tweak a little, then a little more, then close enough and just play.

Problem lies here. You need to tweak the living shit out of these things at gig level volumes to sound good.


Just consider that, please friends, as you are working up these devices for a band setting.

I got my sound on my POD where I like it when playing by myself or with an acoustic player but when I sit in with a band the great clean sound I had just does not cut through. At the moment I am playing with one other acoustic player and not sitting with bands that often so I keep going with my POD.
