Hey Now before this thread gets really dumb I would like to chime in. First off whoever said the BOYS SUCK ever probably should find another board to post on! Secondly, Vinnie was a professional and is better than ANY current keyboardist in ANY cover or tribute band out there. He was in the Grateful Dead! And lastly when I started this thread I really thought that we would talk about who has a nice Tri-axis, Soldano, TC setup or how to make your Trio, MC2300, Midi system work better as it pertains to these specific years! I really wanted to talk about GEAR like how great was Bobbys grey modulus or I dont like the Bolt. Yes I agree that the bands personal life and drug use did effect the band but thats been going on since day one. Im not really concerened about how high Jerry was or did someone have deppresion isssues, these things are not for us to publicly debate its in poor taste. I love ALL of the band members past and present despite what I think about what drugs they may be taking. This is Rock and Roll! Again I'm not trying to tell anyone how they should act or post I just wanted to get opinions about the gear from this period. oh and my favorite Eyes would be the early ones. 10 cents

Vinnie was part of the gear. And that part of the gear was the weak link. I love your loyalty but Chimenti and Barraco are good, real good.

VW was chosen firstly becuase his high harmony ability and secondly for his keys ability.

It's funny he's called the weak link. He was the choice of the Dead and what they wanted to do.

Seems like as he came on the GD were evolving to their next sound and one many didn't like.

One of my favorite live GD memories is Samba in the Rain Chicago 94.

Wasn't it McNally who said they grabbed the first guy that could do the high harmonies.

Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for the guy. But to imply that they carefully and strategically choose Vinnie - and then were happy with the decision - is preposterous. Just look at what happened post-GD.

I really don't wanna turn this into Vinnie bashing. We actually liked Samba and some of those trailing high harmonies were pretty damn cool, New Speeway comes to mind - "Moooowntuuuuuuuaaahhhhnn"

I only blame Vince for sucking from 90 to about 92 (and didn't like his or other songs of the period very much except LRR & Corrina); I have to blame Garcia, my HERO, for 95% of suckage 92-95.

And fact- not opinion- the 90's Eyes are CRAZY SLOW, slower than the most languid early ones, nearly comatose (OK that part is opinion).

3/31/94, 2/26/94, 3/20/93, all are at very nearly the same SNAIL'S pace. 2/20/95 is a hair faster (maybe JG asked for a slight ramp up in the click track) but still slower than any of the "slow" 1973 EOTWs (3/28 < 8/1) and wayyy below Mean, for which we could probably use the 5/1/88 = 5/26/77 (also = 7/12/89) as a reference. Clearly 1979 thru 1983 or so represent the speediest versions ever played, book-ended by years (78 & 84) featuring slightly slower but still way faster-than-avg EOTWs. Obvs there are a few exceptions like 10/17/81 which is below avg, but dayumn! These are like cheetahs... or Millenium Falcons.

Here's a bizarrely slow one for the period: http://www.archive.org/details/gd82-04- ... sbeok.shnf - and it doesn't even sound like an Eyes groove at all, almost a GDRTFB rhythm! Of course, not nearly as slow as 93-95. 4/8/82 is superfast again, but at least it sounds like Eyes... 7/31/82 is only slightly faster than "avg". 8/29/83 is about as fast as 2/27/81!

I happen to love the very fast ones, nearly as much as the 73-74 masterpieces.

I remember thinking in '78 that they were starting to play everything too damn fast. Took all the "air" out of the songs.

me thinks those extreme tempo fluctuations had to have something to do with whatever the extracurricular activities were at the time...

Where did I say carefully? Yes, strategically - high harmonies, keys skills, pick-up material.

If they weren't happy things would have changed. They've done it before.

What happened post-GD to support your claim? VW suffered severe depression and purposely OD'd on RD tour buss. He was then a liability. That is why he was excluded. Let's look, though. He WAS INCLUDED and played with RD!

Anything I'd say at this point would praly just sound like Vinbashing. And I am really not that into that, nor do I care to get into a semantics argument.
Peace.

Check out the "Eyes" from 3-13-82, a rather excellent version with an infectious bounce to it(one of my favorite all time versions) for a coke fueled period. Hell, listen to the "Franklin's" from this show, one of the most rockin' versions ever! The "Estimated" also has a longer/stronger jam than usual. The only thing that detracts from this show is a lack of a good soundboard.

That second set has been a long time favorite. It was far and a way the best AUD I had in my collection for years - and maybe still.

Did the slower eyes return on 6-17-91?

Sarcastic; very much so. But, I really did not care for their sound during this period at all, aside from the enhanced melodies the in-ear monitors helped with.

I looked back at some of the Eyes I saw during this period... 10/11/94 being the fastest. I guess it's all relative, but it's almost 20bpm faster than that '82 version.

While combing through the archive, I did come across this little gem:
