I may have an opportunity to purchase a vintage Fender amp head - possibly a Showman or Bassman or something else?? I don't know much about them and I need info.

I primarily play Bobby, however, I'm also in the market for a nice Fender amp for non-Weir stuff...

What should I look for???

I probably don't know nearly as much as other people but I'll throw my 2 cents - I was at a guitar place in near philly about a month ago and tried out tons of vintage amps - From bassman to Mk III's and I noticed that whenever the amp didn't have reverb it sounded empty to especially when I played a a chord - even if I had the reverb down low, I tried a Dual showman reverb through a fender cab and it was just amazing! The tone was great ( I was using a custom guitar with p90's). It was like an early 70's late 60's dead tone. But it's pretty versatile because I could pull off/get close to a 80's tone with an SG.

Which amp? Lots of vintage heads.

Both TS and I own DSRs which can get you either Bobby or Jerry tones or ANYONE who ever used a Twin.

I've got a BMR too which is a great freakin' rockin' amp! With hums it just barely starts to clip at gig volume when digging in hard.

If you have the chance to score on a vintage head, go for it.

+2... not that I have really* tried any of the spring simulators like EH Grail, or any digital verbs in about the last 10 years- but if you are already looking at vintage Fenders, you might as well get everything you want while you're at it.

Of course if you are looking for more specific advice, the first thing most of us want to know is your amp budget.

I have a 72 dual showman reverb and I love it. It covers the Jerry stuff and lots of other stuff very well. It'll blow the windows and your ear drums out if you turn it up too loud, but as far as the classic, clean fender tone goes, it's full of it. If I could only keep one amp this would be it. I also agree that reverb is a must, no matter which old fender you get.

Hey there, I have a early 70's Fender PA-100 in mint condition! She has 4 channels and reverb.... It is nearly exact to silver face twin with four channels that can be modded to any voice you wish very easily. 100watts of clean power. Clean headroom for days! I love this thing but I have a Two Rock Custom 100 also and just can't keep both at this time. I can send photos if you like. $500 plus shipping.... Please let me know if you have any questions. I like them but would never own one since it has no reverb.

Also it's tube rectified so lower headroom.

The 2x10 sealed cab will be tight and directional - but which speakers?
