JOHN "MARMADUKE" DAWSON (1945-2009)

John passed away peacefully on July 21, 2009 at the age of 64 in Mexico, where he had retired several years ago. It is with great sadness that we relay this news, and extend our deepest condolences to his family and all his many fans out there.

His songs inspired us in so many ways. His energy, passion and commitment to the New Riders brought us all so much joy over the years. We can all be thankful that his music and legacy will live on forever.

Very sad news. I'll always remember the one time I was fortunate enough to see Marmaduke perform, 15 years ago, and how he invited my friend and I to hang out backstage after the show and how warm, generous and down-to-earth he was.

Oh Man. That is sad news.
I was just listening to the NRPS on the way into work this morning.
'Saw them first in '79 at The Lone Star Cafe' in NYC.
That was the beginning of my Pedal Steel trip.
Opened up for them in 2005 and set up my steel right next to Buddy Cages steel. Dawson had retired by then but I had seen him playing as a trio in both Seattle and Portland a few times before retiring.
RIP Mr. JD.
