I just upgraded the two 6L6 power tubes in my Peavey Valveking 112 from JJ's to Winged C's. Wow! Lovin' the new sound - the Winged C's are expensive but worth every penny to me! I just need to replace my stock speaker with a Weber or a Jensen maybe. Speaking of which - my local guitar tech is highly recommending the Jensen CK 12. Anyone have any experience or thoughts about this speaker, or other recommendations? I've heard much good talk about the Weber Neo mags - they're a definite consideration. It's fantastic how much change can be made from tube replacement. My mediocre amp is well on it's way to making me very happy.

Speaking of tubes, does anyone know what tubes Jerry used in his Trio? Don't know that I've ever seen a thread about those.

Not sure what was in the Trio. I'm sure they ditched the crap from Groove Tubes, which really are typically the crappiest Chinese tubes re-labeled with GT on them.

Healy said he loved using old Tung-Sol or GE tubes in Jerry's stuff.

Also, Winged-C has been making pretty darn good power tubes for a while. I forget the history, but I think they are the original Svetlana factory. I used to buy their EL34's for audiophile power amps.

That NOS GE is the deal. The Tung-Sol linked above is a new production from Russia. May be a good tube, but isn't the real NOS thing.

You can add NOS (new old stock) or UTG (used tested good) Telefunken and Mullard and Brimar to the list of great preamp tubes worth trying.

Be careful of Winged-C's. They had more than a few bad batches a few years back. Make sure they are current production.

Another watershed day today. In fact, a major day for my amp. After having retubed the power amp tubes with winged c's, I felt it was sounding dirty, so I replaced all the EH preamp tubes with JJs. My local guitar tech happened to also have a vintage 200 watt EVM speaker from a Sundown amp that he sold me and installed for me. I'm in absolute tone heaven. My 50 watt peavey valveking kills it now. spakly clean with tons of headroom. it's really very sweet. as he said, it's now like having half of a vintage twin or a mesa. i'm so excited, just had to share it with you.
