It's been written that when Vince came on board he was told no B3.

Garcia was quoted many times saying they wanted to get away from the percussion player that was KG and bring in someone with more harmonic sensibilities. That was Brent in spades.

OT, but... I've also often wondered what effect the keyboard slot had on the development of Bobby's ultra-shrill (in a nice way ) tone or how that whole thing developed... was it as a case of Bob being lost in the mix with Brent and having to forge some new niche for himself or was it a case of Brent having to carry more of the full-spectrum harmonic aspects while Bobstar did his thing? I'm inclined towards the latter, as Bob has continued with the ice-picks to the ears thing even when he's totally running the show in Ratdog.

Seems to me that was Bob's decision to better position himself in the midrange. The GD had a heavy midrange in the 80s:
1. Garcia
2. Brent
3. Some of Mickey's percussion instruments
4. Phil played in upper bass registers

Then consider who was in the bass register:
1. A bit of Garcia
2. Brent's left hand
3. Most of Billy
4. Alot of Mickey
5. Phil!

Seems like that upper register is all that was left!

This has always been my belief as well. I'm sure he didn't sit around his house with a practice amp thinking it sounded awesome to hear nothing but 2khz (or whatever it is) and up. But in the context of a very full mix, it worked.

I think where he failed at this attempt is how he went about it - he went too far. I agree it's somewhere maybe 1500-200 hz and up.

But it appears he gets all that from just the tone stack.

Try using an eq and do a -6 from about 800 and down. OMG! That accomplishes something very similar abut not as thin.

The Grateful Dead saw by far their largest fan-base build up in the early to mid-80's, and it grew from there. This was the time when Brent was on board. This must explain this outpouring of response on Brent's behalf. This whole new legion of fans got on board in a similar time frame as Brent. That's no way completely representative of the scene, but it is a demographic.
Nothing even comes close to the Dead between 71' and 77'- And that isn't solely dependent on the difference between Keith and Brent....Jerry said it himself...he began to get really "complacent"...shall we say. Bob too. It was a long road.

I just checked that out myself. Jeez...I was expecting something worse than that. That wasn't a Meltdown, in my opinion. I never heard that "Maybe You Know" tune before. He was letting out some emotion, it sounded alot better than the Drums/Keys Jam before it. In fact, I thought I could hear the tension building up in the Drums/Keys Jam myself. That's where I thought the "meltdown was going to occur.

The best "Maybe You Know" might be 4/26/83 (an all around PHENOMENAL show), but 4/20/83 is a good one too iirc. Actually 4/26/83 was the last one played before 4/21/86, the Final one.
