I've seen JK bring an entire stadium of twirlers to a complete stand-still with his Bass solo on Simple Twist.

I know a certain bass player who wanted nothing to do with playing that song until he found out that nobody was going to expect the bass solo if he didn't want to take one...

And who might this "certain bass player" be?

So maybe I'm showing my age (or lack thereof) here, but I'd never heard Midnight at the Oasis before. Checked it out and it instantly reminded me of the song "Slow down" by Morcheeba:

The husband and wife use the tune for an audition into the community theater. They drama it up, and schmaltz it out to the exreme. Holy S**T I fell off the couch laughing.

The little bit I know: Kahn was persona non grata at Front St. once Garcia got hooked, and he apparently did some work on Shakedown St. although I couldn't imagine Phil needing any overdubbing, I can't remember where I read those items may have been wikipedia. I always liked how he and Jerry sounded, also Kahn had a really original style of playing, cant really put my finger on it almost like a wash basin bass. I only saw JGB twice both times on the '93 fall tour and man did they sound great!

Interestingly, JK appears to be happily hanging with the GD fam in the "family movies" section of the DVD that came with the recent Egypt release.

I vaguely remebered reading the liner notes about 25 years ago that Maria Muldaur is providing backup vocals on Garcia's Cats Under The Stars. Dug it out, and sure enough, she's on Love In The Afternoon, and Gomorrah.

She did backup vocals on at least one live Garcia band show that I have. I don't know if she did a whole tour or what.

Maria and Donna were the original Jerrettes....

For a long time I'd been under the impression that the Fender preamp head Kahn always seemed to use was an older Showman, possibly a brown/blonde-era, but it was pointed out to me recently that the number of knobs suggest a Bassman head. It's been suggested that it is a blackface, but due to the older style knobs and logo plate, it looks to me like possibly a brown '62 or '63 that has been reupholstered in the blackface tolex and grillcloth?? Or maybe a BF with older knobs and logo?

I'm digging up my own old thread because I found it on Google search.

I've never forgotten this great post but wasn't really ready to absorb it, and I'm still not except in a very long-term-planning kind of way.

I know diddly-squat about Fender amps other than all you Jerry guys use Twin Reverb preamps. I understand that the Alembic F2B is based on the Dual Showman preamp. But the preamps were all pretty similar, right?

The Fender head on top of the Mac in the picture looks to be far too small to have much of a poweramp section inside... but I've never heard of Fender making a separate preamp...

AS far as the preamps are concerned, the Dual Showman and Twin are pretty much identical, actually just as an overall amp The DSR and Twin are very closely related.

That Fender Bass head on top of the MAC is absolutely big enough to have the power section in there. That is a pretty standard sized Fender Head cabinet from that era.
