Wow, John Kahn was an incredible player.
I had the privilege to see him play with several incarnations of Jerry's bands.
He was a great fit with Jerry, they had a connection and with most of the types of music they played together.
He played a P bass most of the time, He would really go off on some solo stuff, Simple Twist, Russian Lullaby both come to mind.
He passed from Heart condition same as Jerry, massive quantities of Heroin in system along with an assortment of other stuff.
He Passed about 9 months after Jerry, I guess he had nothing to do anymore.

He played with Paul Butterfield and AL Kooper, also Maria Muldaur and John Lee Hooker.

I saw his P bass up for auction about a year ago. it was a 1959 I think.

I love her voice. Have you guys listened to the guitar solo in Midnight at the Oasis? I think it was Amos Garret(sp?) and I think it is brilliant.

I was in a band in the late 70s that did the song. I took the solo on it and was never more frustrated. Couldn't do it justice at the time and haven't tried again since.

Ahh yes.... I was but a wee little lad in summer camp... Summer of '74... somewhere in PA (Camp Eljibar).
MATO was played constanly, along with Rock The Boat [rock the boat baby] Rock The Boat [don't tip the boat over].
Love 'em!
Car Wash was in there somewhere too, iirc.

I too have a version of MATO that I used to play on acoustic (I'll have to dust that one off).
Never attempted the solo, but yeah, that was a great solo!

For a long time I'd been under the impression that the Fender preamp head Kahn always seemed to use was an older Showman, possibly a brown/blonde-era, but it was pointed out to me recently that the number of knobs suggest a Bassman head. It's been suggested that it is a blackface, but due to the older style knobs and logo plate, it looks to me like possibly a brown '62 or '63 that has been reupholstered in the blackface tolex and grillcloth?? Or maybe a BF with older knobs and logo?

I tried it a few times... it stung my eyes and was very distracting. Maybe with enough H in your system it's less noticeable.

nah IMO its still pretty rough. i think trading 4's or something would be the only way i could play while smoking one
