What was the guitar/amp setup at Roseland? He sounded great with the Strat -> Fender amp setup back in January.

I think he's a pretty much an either/or guy; Strat or LP and no middle ground/tapped HB's from which to glean a mix of sounds. And, for God's sake leave the Soladanos at home for the Dead tour!

I'm pretty sure you will be seeing the 335 and the strat. Don’t worry he will not be bringing his Mule rig with him....I hope you will go into this with an open mind I believe Warren just may surprise you on this tour.

Wow Jonarobb,I was flamed mercilessly for saying Warren had a thin tone, aand accused of not knowing a thing about guitar...good luck
Also I read your post from Roseland and made me feel old and bad for not being there,'cause for some reason I trust your evaluation... your other posts are chock full of good info and and insight.
I hope the boys get it together, I might even go to willks barre...

Havent listened to much but I was thinking Warren was laying way back. Seemed like he was letting the core 4 do their thing ...

The E Filter thing I heard was bad. It's to easy to make them sound gimmicky .... I thought it sounded a bit toy-ish.

Reverb is a good thing

Even though I think his e. filter sound blows I'm still pumped. Warren is a great player.
I just tell myself -

Yeah, didn't mean to instigate that Warren equals something negative. The guy is a smokin guitarist. The show at Roseland was amazing on so many levels. My hyper critical ear just needs to relax I guess. It's interseting to note that they picked Chimenti on keys. He's the best of everything that the Grateful Dead had in the piano spot. Hammond, Rhodes, Piano.... And when he solos or comps, it's so inspiring. His technique allows him to play in the style that suits the music. So compare this with Warren, and unfortunately you see limitations instead of potential. BUT, I've come along way with my criticism of Warren Haynes. I'll continue to keep an open mind and am very psyched for some more of whatever that was the other night....

The Jam out of Saint Stephen into Dark Star was really exploratory and the wormhole doors were just about to open but they put the kabash on it. I could have listened to a whole show of just that kind of playing.


If i could just get on stage to turn Warrens reverb up......

Me Three. I expected Warren to come out with his huge Gibson tone (which he does still have BTW, even after Allen Woody) - then saw that Strat and knew he's at least trying to fit in correctly. The Dead's whole dynamic and sound were built around Jerry's guitar... it doesn't have to be Jerry for it to work but a Gibson humbucker through smoking Soldanos would be too big. So long story short, I'm getting excited to see them in a couple of weeks.
