I was just reading what Gilmour said about the Rolling Stones and how they should quit touring. I couldn't agree more. Then I thought about how tired I am of seeing Paul McCartney everywhere selling his name. On the flip side, guys like B.B. King and Clapton tend to do it so well. Who else comes to mind?

In my personel opinion, I can't believe how popular the Rolling Stones have been and are. I do agree, they just keep going through the motions nowadays.I alway wondered what kind of band they could have become if Jagger would have stopped jumping around and strapped on a guitar for some real jamming. I mean I swear, you watch the Stones now, and they just simply play the songs over and over the same way they are on the radio or whatever. But I guess thats there popularity. Is easier to sell someone jumping all over on stage, instead of true musical talent.(not that the stones don't have true musical talent. they do, sure as hell a lot more then me.

C'mon, you're gonna dis the Stones for their longevity? Am I the only one who sees the irony of this on a community deadicated to a band that toured for 30yrs? I mean you obviously can't compare the dead and the stones, but the pot & the kettle y'know. Especially since a case could be made that JG should've retired a few years before he died. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of much of anything that the stones have done since some girls, but just because they are still making records and touring after more than 40yrs doesn't automatically make them sellouts. Personally, I think you gotta respect a bunch of senior citizens who are still out there rockin. Just my two cents.

I gotta tell ya, I saw McCartney for the first time last year and he KICKED ASS.

He actually fell due to a staging issue and could have EASILY justified cutting the show short. He didn't. He played a tremendous set list and came across to me as completely sincere.

I went to the October 2005 show at Duke and they were very good.
I never disrespect a band for continueing to play live. I'd prefer all bands play as much as possible until they die on stage. I would like to see the Stones do some small venues and really jam.

I actually thought their half-time show was rather pathetic. So was their "SARS fest" show in toronto. but in all fairness, after AC/DC's set, the Stones didn't stand a chance

I would have to agree with this. Many people I talk with think the Dead should have stopped after Pig died!

I've seen the Stones in '81, '89, '96, '01, '04 and this past year in Portland. Their best show was in '04! Keith Richards IS rock and roll and though they're not a jam band, they still rage. They do new songs each tour, including breaking out oldies like "Can't You Hear me Knocking" and "All Down the Line". They did new covers on this tour, in honor of Bob Marley and Ray Charles. Mick may jump around, but you must remember, he invented that and the fact that he can still do it in his 60's is one helluva accomplishment. Can your dad do that for 2+hours every night?!? I like their newest album, and I loved Voodoo Lounge. Sure they have some clinkers, but for someone who saw the Dead over 300 times, I say the Stones are a close second. The Dead performed a concert. The Stones perform a show. And let's not forget that Jerry performed The Last time, Satisfaction, Wild Horses and It's all over now from the Stones.

Oh, and btw, this all being said, the super bowl was pathetic. Sorry, but the sound was awful and the choice of songs wasn't the best.

I just cannot believe this thread even exists or that Gilmour (who is 60) would say such dickish, brazenly hypocritical drivel. WTF???

Keith, Ron and Charlie are still top-shelf players and Mick still does his thing with aplomb and obvious FUN. Why would anyone want to dump on that?? fwiw, I'm sure I would have much more fun seeing the Stones than Gilmour's band.

My highschool photo teacher used to work at multiple major venues, and helped bands tour (she wasnt a roadie...im not clear exactly on what she did)

but she got to meet Elvis, Marley, Sabbath, the Who, and the stones. She said the stones were one of her favorite bands to see.

Coming from her, someone who got to hang out with the stones and said they were the best, I think I'll trust her. And not Gilmor, who is in the exact same position as the stones.
