40 years ago tonight, THE Dark Star happened; the ultimate multi-track capture of an unrepeatable, miraculous unfolding, and perhaps the single finest track the Dead ever put on vinyl.

Of course, the whole show 2/27/69 recording is even better than the album itself, because one needs the seamless, impossibly beautiful pairing of Mountains Of The Moon> Jam> Dark Star to fully appreciate this peak performance. Not to mention a crazy awesome TIFTOO, Lovelight and others.

I listened to this Dark Star a couple nights ago and for some reason it's just never done much for me. I know it's supposed to be the epitomy because that's what everyone says but I'll take just about any '72-'73 DS over the Live Dead one. Please don't get me wrong I think it's a very decent one, I just never understood all the hoopla. I can hear the cries of heresy already. Have Mercy!

x2. In high-school I didn't know any traders and the Dead were just about done.... so I listened to L/D about 5 times every week.

One of the truly great albums of all time. Those big double LPs had practical "cleaning" uses too.

The following night, 2-28, is being seeded in SBD form over on shnflac and although I haven't heard it yet, some are saying it ranks right up there. The song list is very similar, and boils down to 3 CDs of music.

Yeah, I was really throwing HBD to the show 2/27/69 Fillmore West which was the source for the DS>SS>11. Obvs, the album came out several months later.

Wife and child went out for a little while last night so I was able to listen full blast... good times.

I don't really compare 68 to early '69 Dark Stars to 71-73 DS's, but if I did it would be that the earlier ones have all the cosmicness of the later ones but compressed into a smaller "universe"... like a playground, and they never reach an "un-danceable" space. Around late 69, DS began to free itself of those constraints and became hugely expansive and rhythmically metamorphic. To use a conversational metaphor, open to any "topic".

Um.... if you search around for torrent 16248 you'll get a pristine recording of the full 2-27 show. It is not the identical source to the album, so apparently it is ok for trade. I just grabbed it earlier, so I haven't heard much of it, but OMG is it clear and fine!!! Get it if you can.
