I think one of the biggest obstacles is the politicians' fear that they will be labeled as "soft on drugs" and will lose their re-election bids. Political dynamite. You can be sure that whoever comes out favoring legalization will be attacked for it as a political tool to gain advantage. Politicians don't think like we do.

Here in California, especially in the Democrat counties, LA, SF, San Diego and Sacramento, it doesn't really matter if you support legalization.

In the less populated Republican dominated counties and the southern LA area county of Orange, it could mean political death.

Liberals outnumber conservatives here 3:2.

Yeah, I think in CA you have a shot, I was thinking more about the federal level, though.

Speaking at a press conference with DEA administrator Michelle Leonhart, Attorney General Eric Holder declared that ending medical marijuana raids ”is now American policy.”

A reporter asked, “shortly after the inauguration there were raids on California medical marijuana dispensaries…do you expect these to continue?”, noting that the President had promised to end the raids in the campaign.

Holder responded, “What the President said during the campaign…is consistent with what we will be doing here in law enforcement. He was my boss in the campaign….He is my boss now. What he said in the campaign is now American policy.”
