I have seen well over 300 dead shows and over 1000+ live shows and I've only paid over ticket price once. Please, I beg of you, don't buy tickets from agencies, scalpers, ebay, etc. at inflated prices. It ruins it for those of us who can't or won't pay more. There is no other reason to pay more other than the fact that you're supporting something that is completely immoral. I know that when I was on tour, it was a badge of honor to sell tickets at cost or to give them away. It's one of the reasons I loved the scene so much. So please, don't ruin it for everyone else! Ok, rant done, sorry for that.

(Reason: I was on craigslist thinking I was going to get Gorge tickets and offered cost and the guy laughed, saying he had no intention of going to the show, just bought them to make money and has them on ebay for $750 for the pair!!)

Also think it's a little funky to tell someone how they should spend their money. I'm paying out the ass for the Hampton Phish shows and I wouldn't be going if I hadn't been willing to pay well above face value. You can look at it your way, but for me it's about going to the show. Shit costs money, we pay taxes and we die.

I am not telling you how to spend your money, I'm begging you to do what is correct. All you do is make it possible for people to purchase tickets who have no affiliation with the show and then turn around and sell them at inflated prices. It's wrong and imho, it's way way worse than downloading music illegally since you are in no way a part of the process, but you are making money from it. If people were only willing to pay cost, that is what it would sell for. The band tries everything in it's power to assure that people who buy tickets do so because they want to see the band, yet when you do buy from folks you are going directly against what the band is wanting to do.
Oh, and I disagree with you about the Phish show. I am positive you could get into Phish at Hampton for cost because I'm sure tons of others are.

Dude when you were on tour and bought "goodies" in the parking lot do you think everyone just sold their shit for face value...how did you support yourself on tour??
I use to be in the herbal pharmacy business myself and I could almost guarantee that everyone marks everything up to get their cut...that dude who bought the tickets to make money off them is investing in something he thinks he can make a profit off of.
I now am a chef and run my own restaurant....shouldn't I get to make money off of the food I buy to sell to customers. If my joint is too expensive for you then I guess you won't come and eat...its the American way....

Yes, you should get your cut, just like everyone else. You miss the point. You DO SOMETHING to the food you get, you prepare it, make it your own, you deserve what you get because you worked hard for it. Why should you get a cut from SOMEONE ELSE'S gig? It's more like if I stood out in front of your restaurant, bought up all your food and sold it to people on the street at 5 times the price. It's not cool and I guarantee that after awhile of watching me do nothing and make 4 times the profit you make you're gonna get angry at some point and do everything in your power to stop me and/or try to get some of my cut.

If no one bought them over cost, then no one could sell them over cost. Problem is, people ARE willing to pay over cost. As for Hampton, I believe very few people going to those shows who didn't get tix from the band/TM somehow on their own, are going to get in for cost.
I agree about the "don't buy them over cost" idea, but it's just not the reality.

There'd be no buyers for the food you're trying to resell. There might be buyers if the food was so good that there was no room in the restarant and there was no other way to get that food so many people wanted. Otherwise, no resale if gonna happen.

I thought the point of "don't pay more than face" was that the profit itself (not who is profiting) disadvantages the sweaty masses that saved enough to buy a ticket at face, only to find that some scalping organization cleaned out the allotment so that they are now priced out of their range. It's kinda like urban gentrification...

FWIW, The Dead's shows are not gonna sellout anyhow. Even MSG still has tix left. I'm sure anyone who has face value will be able to get into ANY Dead show this tour. The way the sales have been set up, it looks like they're sold out or only behind stage is left, when in fact they aren't. There's gonna be lots of people getting in--especially to weeknight shows---for well under face. I'm hoping that's gonna be me in Buffalo and even in Philly. In Penn State, it was hard to sell a ticket for face. Meanwhile, people were all concerned about it ahead of time. And, that was a $50 ticket, with the ABB---these are $100 and the economy is far worse now than in October.

Scalping agencies are gonna find out they were too greedy on this tour.

Get over it. The tickets are going to sell whether we buy them or some other schmuck. Scalping has been around since the old testament. I understand supporting the artist but it's a dog eat dog world. You're either the consumer or you're are the dish. Money is just paper and it comes and goes. I don't generally pay top dollar for tickets and tend to get into alot of great shows for free. So if I have to pay a couple of extra shekels for a gig I really want to see then I'm going to. Scalpers have families and bills to pay as well. Let them have their hustle

ADDED: For what it's worth, I just called a friend of mine who is a ticket scalper. He has a bunch of MSG tickets for a $109.00/ea. He's making a hundred percent profit on em'. Good for him.

I have a couple of points here. 1, I'm with amyjared a bit because of the fact that Ticketbastard doesn't play fair and you and I don't really get a fair shake at getting the good seats at face value. It's funny how they ar gone so quickly, but then show up on scalper/agency sites.

On the other hand, i can't help but remember a Jerry show at the Hartford Civic Center.....a bunch of "fans" looking for tickets. I asked one, "you need a ticket?". "Yes". "Oh, well, the box office is right over there, they've got plenty".

I don't go for that either.

That said, there's gonna be a lot of tix day of show for most venues.
And that's if the weather's nice. You get some nasty weather and there could be a LOT of people trying to get rid of tix for real cheap.
