Whats up with the lighter 40 watt twin costing 24 bills and the 100 watt twin going about half that? One would think it would be the other way around. Is it just greater demand for a lighter amp or does it have some nano technology that hasn't been invented yet?

Used is fine especially if you can work on it yourself. I just posted trouble with my amp the other day. It had a connection issue. That was covered under their 5 year warranty. Combo amps are like torture chambers inside. And fender isn't known for their great solder joints.

That being said, for $600 to $700 I would doubt you would need too much warranty work to justify the price difference. Tubes aren't covered and that will be the big expense anyway.

The 65 reissue twin is $1300 on GC website and the one I have (100 watt) is $1500. I got it less than 2 years ago at Sam Ash for $1150. And they through in a cover.

A great Jerry combo right there. You'd get it for say $750, spend $150 for a quick check up and prolly replace a part or two and done.

I don't see the point in buying a new amp unless you are going custom or boutique then I can totally see where you'd want to invest.

If an amp breaks down it breaks down. I don't see where a warranty helps or saves you. It's still in the shop.
Last I checked GC doesn't offer free loaners on warranty repairs nor do they rent amps and most don't negotiate price any longer.

IF I was to buy a new Fender amp I'd work with a local shop and get them to agree to a free comparable loaner for warranty repair.

New Fender amps are junk. Not a personal preference, or opinion, just the reality of Fender. Junk, meaning, an inferior product for the price.

When you bought a Twin Reverb in 1972 for $575.00 it didn't have to be serviced until an average of 5 years. This includes power tubes. When you buy a 65' Re-issue Twin Reverb for $1150 it has statistically supported service/return issues in under 8 months. Will this happen with every Fender amp you buy? No.

From a service point of view, older Fender amps are easier and less cost offensive to buy and maintain. I keep a rotating cast of various Silverfaces here for sale. Buy them all over the place for next to nothing, rebuild em', make them stage and/or studio ready. It's alot of fun and it's cool to help keep the older ones in circulation.

Latest score was Friday afternoon on NYC Craigslist. Picked up a 1973 Twin Reverb with original Oxford speakers and GE power tubes for $500 cash. Was it perfect? No. Chipped knobs, handle was missing, power cord was frayed, etc... But 2 hours labor, $50 in caps and resistors, a handle, power cord and a 12AT7, and this amp sounds amazing. More importantly, whoever buys it will have a solid gigging amp with years of service free operation.

Not trying to be moodkill here, sorry. But if you have the money for a new Fender I guarantee I can find you something older and BETTER for the same money.

As a last dig on new Fender's, I got invited to a corporate shindig in Philly in December hosted by the Fender Custom shop and Premier Guitar magazine. Un-named guest guitarist blew the speaker on the new Custom shop 5E3 Deluxe. There were several other amps on stage fortunately. Fender puts a $60 speaker in a $3000 Custom shop amp????????

fwiw, Last time I checked they have a level of extended warranty that can be purchased at the time of sale that says if you have ANY problem with the covered item, they will take it back and give you a brand new one right there and then, no questions asked (I think this can be extended for up to 5 years).
I am aware that not all items are cover-able, microphones as I recall are not coverable, not sure about Reissue TR's.

I assumed this was like a fantasy thread, like, say you need an amp for a gig and GC is the only place open... My opinion in that regard would be go grab a TR off the floor, use it on the gig, and return it within 30 days. I see a fair amount to Reissue TR's on backline-provided gigs. I used them for an hour for Pedal Steel, and they were fine. If buying for myself, I too would turn to Craigslist. In this economy they are literally coming out of the closets and great finds are out there popping up every day.
