Alright guys, I'm an idiot when it comes to effects. I have a wah pedal, thats about it though. I play rythem guitar for my band, so I never worry about fancy sounds or fancy leads. I play chords.

Although sometimes I get a bit curious

Last night I went to see the Schwag (Midwest GD tribute band) and their guitar player used an effect that I know jerry used. It sounds like a wah pedal, but he isnt stepping on anything to make the "wah" sound. he was just kinda walking around making it happen.

I know the rest of you are smarter than me at this kinda stuff. so could someone just tell me what they use to create this sound?

Most likely an envelope filter.

they do have auto-wahs too, but I've never heard one that sounded any good

Most likely it's a filter effect. Filters come in a few varieties: Wah, Auto Wah, Envelope, Phaser. And each brand sounds a little bit different.

For a rhythm guitarists, I'd highly recommend 2 of those for your garrison of equipment:
- Wah
- Phaser with a wet/dry mix pot

Could've also been a Mu-Tron III pedal.

You got it Shakedown....it's a Mutron, or perhaps the modern day Qtron. I play Bob's part and use a Qtron Envelope Filter quite extensively! It's a great effect that works with your mood.
