The bunch that I played for comparison were all at the same shop and probably all came in at the same time so may have been part of the same manufacturing batch, and the shop (I think) takes good care to set up each guitar before it goes out on the wall. I was really shocked by the consistency of them. They were all the plain jane normal strat that goes in the mid 400s. Perhaps there is more variation from batch to batch than within a batch.
That being said, yeah, I would personally look around for a good used one for that kind of money, and beat the snot out of it yourself if that's what you're into. But, if you love the guitar, and have the money, do what makes you happy.
