It was on sale for $6 in hard back so I bought it. Haven't cracked it yet. Is it any good?

I've read "A long strange trip","Searching for the sound" and "Garcia".

Of those 3 grateful dead related books I liked seaching for the sound the most, which is saying alot because all 3 were great.

Id also recommend Conversations with the Dead. Its basically a compilation of interviews David Gans had with the Dead members

You mean Garcia: An American Life? Of those , plus Rock Scully's Living With The Dead) I would rank them: 1.Searching
2.G:AAL
3.LWTD
4.WALST

They are all entertaining reads though. I know a lot of people didn't like Scully's portrayal, but I take it all with a grain of salt, and enjoy the persepectives, the more twisted the better.

Yes it's a very good read. It has to be the best book on the Grateful Dead overall so far. It spends a lot of time covering the late 60's and I feel a little short on detail in other periods but still a great read.

I've also read Garcia - An American life. Searching For The Sound. Home Before Daylight. Living With The Dead by Rock Scully and the Garcia Tribute Book by Rolling Stone which contains my very favorite photo of Jerry. I've not read Dark Star - that other book on Jerry yet.

Two other very good books I'd recommend are Turn Turn Turn (Folk Rock Revolution) and the follow up Eight Miles High (Haight-Ashbury to Woodstock) both by the very good Richie Unterberger.

I'm currently reading a very good book called White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s by producer Joe Boyd.

I'm a terrible hoarder of books!!
