So after buying and selling a lot of sub-par gear, I think Ive learned my lesson. Whatever you buy, get top of the line, otherwise you'll end up needing to buy more sub-par stuff. Its just a plain fact, good stuff lasts longer.

So as far as guitars go, I think that the next one I want is going to be a custom built guitar. Im really not happy with anything currently on the market. Right now I have a Highway 1 Telecaster that isnt bad, but it doesnt have all the versatility that I want.

So . . . . right now I live in Phoenix, AZ. I dont really know any local luthiers so Im coming to you all for advice. Know of any good luthiers? Doesnt have to be in this area Ive talked to people who have done this all online (jdarks being one) and ended up with great guitars.

I just want a Jerry-esque guitar. Not to mimmick or try to copy or reproduce a "jerry" tone, just cause I think the guitars look cool. Nice horns, good wood, thru neck, nice pups, and all that other fancy stuff.

Any recommendations of places I can go? I know resurection guitars is no longer in business, shame that, and I really dont know where to go. Also, what sort of price range are we talking here?

Captain i suggest looking into www.Phigaguitars.com His recreation's of Garcia's Irwin's look really nice. I have a resurrection guitar i had no idea they went out of business do you know what happened? I believe one of our fellow rukinders has one of the Wolf replica's and was very pleased with it. No idea what happened over at Resurrection. I heard it from a JDarks video when he was talking about his Resurrection guitar. Sad, those guys did some nice work.

Interestingly, over the years that I've played Pedal Steel with country bands, a fair amount of DeaHead friends have come to gigs, and have often commented that the Tele players tone is very Jerry-ish.
I think there is something about a Tele through a Deluxe Reverb that catches a Jerry-zone tone in some respects.

Do you ever go to hear The Noodles? I have heard they play somewhere in Pheonix or Mesa every Sunday, and do a DeadHead jam. Just curious. I heard Vince used to sit in sometimes.

I was actually introduced to the Noodles by a dude on here, golfnut (Adam). Ive been a few times. Tempe is a beautiful place. And there is a video of Vince playing TLEO on youtube with the Noodles.

Yeah you can get a good Jerry-ish tone out of a Tele. Im just not too pleased with the versatility of it. The highs are really piercing, too much in some cases. I gotta replace the saddles too. Get some nice brass ones in there and Id like a 'bucker in the neck . . .

Id just love a guitar with some horns, nice pups, real neck and some phat electronics.

I've learned a similar lesson. I wasted so much time and money with low-end gear and then trading for other low end gear then to mid-range gear and buying and selling around there until I go the rig I do now.

Have you looked into Alembic? They do custom work and should be on your list! They do both stock and custom stuff.

Someone in a post mentioned that Resurrection was taking a break and not taking orders. They didnt say why.

Couple things to do to make that tele less sharp - you can add higher resistance caps to the tone control, check to see if the treble bleed was taken out (could be if it wasn't yours new).

I also read the forums here: http://www.telemodders.com/index.html that there is way to cut down the 'icepick-ness' of the tone by using higher rater pots than whats stock.

I am new to wiring so some of this might be off base, but I think I'm right.

For the record, I have a custom build swamp ash tele with a 70's strat style (the big headstock, even for a strat) birdseye neck. Came w/ fender pickups but i think I'm gonna change them out, don't know to what yet.

Tele's are really tough to learn how to get a good sound out of, at least in my opinion, but once you do . I'm always amazed Jerry never played one, esp durring the Workingmans/Beauty/Skullfuck era.[/url]

Yeah, I may look to mod the Tele a bit. I lowered the bridge pick up a bit and that helped, that thing is just too damned sharp.

But I agree that when you know how to get a creamy sound out of the tele you are set. I usually keep that tone knob way down to soften it up a little.

Im planning on getting my HotRod DeVille back today from the shop and hopefully it will be a great match for my Tele for now.

Another thing you can do to mellow out the tone (should have mentioned this above) is notch the volume down to about 75%, which affects treble output but not low end so much, and run it through a booster or compressor to keep a decent drive. Even 90% volume will have this effect. You can keep tone all the way up, and still have the twang, but not so strong. I'm not trying to insult your intelligence if you already know this, but maybe it helps you or someone else. Middle position gives a good mix at these volume levels too.

The guys over at guitarfetish.com make a lipstick pickup for the bridge, which I might through in mine, I've also thought about switching my neck pu out to something, but right now I'm more or less happy with my tone - just looking to play Dr. Frankenstein with a soldering iron.

I have been eyeing the Joe Barden pickups. I personally have not tried these pickups, but have read great reviews about the Joe Barden Tele pickups; might be worth a try. A lot of great players use them. Anyone here have any experiences with them?

It is their myspace page. It looks as though they are still making guitars. I could be wrong though.

The Barden pups are awesome, but really expensive. I've played them in a friend's tele, and I'm planning on converting my Musician to HSH with Barden's Two/Tones at either end and an S-Deluxe in the middle.
