This is a awesome combo amp. Weir used the Dean Markley head in his rig from around 85-89. You can pull the head out of the combo and rack mount it and use it as a preamp. The RM-150 is a screamer.

- how does the reverb sound?
- when racking it you say, preamp. Is the poweramp somewhere else in the amp?
- when racking it, what about the 'verb? tank?
- Does it do electric and acoustic well? Favor one or the other?

The stock speaker that comes with the combo is terribly poor. I worked on one of these for an Rukind member last year. They generally look and sound good but there were some durability issues that had to be addressed, I had to reflow almost all the traces and solder joints in the power section due to bad ventilation and overheating, upgrade all the output transistors to higer quality Toshibas, and we put in an Electro Voice EVM 12L Series II speaker to give it some range. As a head I'm sure it served Weir well but in it's stock form it didn't turn me on.

I've had my Dean for about 5 years. I wanted to have something with balls that I can carry around instead of my rack.

- How is the sound? I love it. It's a clean amp and easy to dial in. Michael Kaufmann has one too and we both love them. Mine came with a Gauss speaker in it surprisingly enough and it sounds great.
- I think the reverb sound great in it. I don't use much but I do use enough to like it.
- If you rack mount it, you need a power amp. The RM-150 has a preamp out. When you use it as a combo you plug it directly into the speaker. Can't remeber if I've ever used it by itself to run my cab with out a power amp.
-Reverb is built into the unit.
-I've used this amp only a couple times for acoustic and it work great. Dylan's using it for acoustic.

Overall, I've never had a issue with this amp. Love it. Talk to MK he'll say the same. We'll never sell ours.

Why do I need a poweramp when rack mounting but not when in combo mode? So all your experience with it is running preamp out > poweramp?

A long as I'm being quoted, I thought I would clarify...

The RM150 head (and the 80 watt RM80 head) have two speaker out jacks, therefore, you can run two separate speaker cabs, all from this head (ie: you don't need a separate power amp). And, at 150 watts, it has lots of power.

Other features:

- pre-amp out jack - if you want to run a separate power amp

- power-amp in jack - if you want to use the RM as a power amp with something different as a pre-amp.

the DR (dual-row) unit is a 2-channel switching amp: one channel is relatively clean, the other has plenty of distortion. Best used with the footswitch.

the SR (single-row) unit only has one channel (the clean one, I think).

J was right - when I bought my RM150, it had some issues. He fixed it up nicely and the speaker upgrade makes a huge difference. If you ever have any equipment repairs, talk to him - he knows his shit.

btw...I have an extra RM80 head for sale.

That's funny, there's a music store next to the venue we played on Saturday -- Johnny D's in Somerville MA, I think it's called Rockin' Bob's Guitars -- and they had a Dean Markley 85-watt tube combo amp in the window, and it wasn't much money. Looked like it was in nice shape, too.
