Does anyone have any ideas about the Key that this song is in? Just by looking at the progression i cannot tell what key this is in. at first i took it to be G major, then G minor, and then Bb major. The key seems to change a few times during the song. if it doesnt, then there are some really weird chord combos that they put together here.

the progression looks like this
In the Key of G
Verse
V-IV-I
bIII-bVII-bVIIm-Isus-I
bIII-bIIIm-#Vmaj7-IVm-I-Isus-I
Chorus
bVIIm-bII-bVI
bVIIm-bII-bVI-IVm/I-I7
bII-IIo7-bVImaj7
Vmaj7-bVmaj7-bV7-bVmaj7-Isus-I

Key of Gm (Phrygian)
V-IV-I
III-VII-VIIm-Isus4-I
III-IIIm-VImaj7-IVm-I-Isus-I

VIIm-II-VI
VIIm-II-VI-IVm/I-I7
II-bbIIIo7-VImaj7
Vmaj7-bVmaj7-bV7-bVmaj7-Isus-I

Key of Bb

III-II-VI
I-V-Vm-VIsus4-VI
I-Im-IVmaj7-IIm-VI-VIsus4-VI

Vm-bVII-IV
Vm-bVII-IV-IIm/VI-VI7
bVII-VIIo7-IVmaj7
IIImaj7-bIIImaj7-bIII7-bIIImaj7-VI

Key of Eb (Phrygian Mode of G)
Eb F G Ab Bb C D Eb

VII-VI-III
V-II-IIm-IIIsus-III
V-Vm-Imaj7-VIm-III-IIIsus-III

IIm-IV-I
IIm-IV-I-VIm/III-III7
IV-bVo7-Imaj7
VIImaj7-bVIImaj7-bVII7-bVIImaj7-IIIsus-III

So which of those is most believable? There are awkward parts in each key.

Nonetheless, a really interesting an enigmatic song. My favorite for those long strange nights

I'm seeing it as predominantly Eb with a modulation to G.

So, the D C G opening of the phrases are key of G and then it modulates to the key of Eb.

Eb has a lot to offer:

Eb Fm Gm Ab Bb Cm and whatever the dissonant chord is.

The Gm chord is very close to the Ebmaj7 in structure, so you're very near the key of Eb for all those chords.

It is an interesting use of chords, indeed.

verse: G major, F minor, G major, Bb major

chorus: F minor

<edit> ehhhh. I take that back, and go with OMD on the last post: Eb major works as well for all of the modulations, and keeps it simpler conceptually. It's a constant back and forth, including in the outro as it shifts to Cm (vi of Eb) and back to G.

<reedit> OMD, what Gm chord? None CF the way I do it.
