In an update to the Yes touring without Jon Anderson topic, it turns out that they have a date booked for here in Richmond on November 19, at the National Theater!

I am SO there - how many chance do you get to watch Steve Howe and Chris Squire from literally 10 feet away? I'm not thrilled about Jon Anderson being replaced for the tour, but I go more for the musicianship than the singing, so I'll get over it.

Rick Wakeman's son Oliver is on keyboards.

Hey, I love blues as well, but there are many other things out there to love also. Steve Howe once said in an interview I read, in which he was being asked about just why Yes' music had so little discernible blues influence - " I love blues myself, but why would I want to stay there forever? The blues is where I started, you have to move on to grow". Makes much sense to me.

Ratdog is also at the National in Richmond on November 4th. This place has been getting lots of good shows since it opened.

I would encourage you (or anyone) who has never seen Yes, to go and see them, even if they are not wild about them. They are one of the few remaining super groups and deservedly so. When they are "on" they sometimes hit that "X-factor" space that the Dead got to. It is unmistakable. Their musicianship can be astoundingly good. As a musician, it is a rare thing to see a band able to do what these guys do. I was never a huge fan of theirs, but have seen them, I forget, at least 3 times and it is well worth it.

i think i see where you're going, they sometimes strike me as pretty rigid and precise. almost mechanical for lack of a better word.

if they were playing at a relatively small place near me like wised says i would certainly do so. but i dont know dont think id pay a full 50+ to see them at, say, MSG.

I would have to disagree with you on that one, but I understand how you could reach that point of view. Think of the difference between the Dead in the studio and the Dead live. There is a similar difference with Yes. I used to think as you do, but not anymore, after seeing them. These guys are not up there doing antiseptic clinical mechanical reproductions of complex changes, they are PLAYING the songs. There is real life and feel and vitality. They are seriously worth checking out, and well worth the price of a ticket as long as they don't go stupid with the prices like CSN or Clapton does.

Thats why I recommended the Yes Movie - its live and you can see 'em rocking out.
I think I took the term "soul" to mean they are just money grubbing hacks but maybe AstroDude meant "no soul" as in no rhythm no emotion.
Still - Yes is not for everyone...

I'm sorry , I thought the start of these posts was a question, which implies choice or at least more that one answer, I don't think I would be alone in sayin that Yes thru their music what I have heard on the radio, does not exhibit much of what people call soul, like in soul music. Also, Emoto, you don't need metaphors or other devices to call me a jerk or a retard, grow some nuts and be direct.
I would repsect that...at least.

but hey I thought I had some choice in the matter.

Why would I want to call you a jerk or a retard? I'm not trying to put you (or anyone else) down at all. and just because you and I might disagree doesn't make either of us jerks or anything. Rather, I am trying to persuade you (and failing, it seems) that you might find Yes live to be interesting on a musical level and engaging on an emotional one. Because the radio and the records don't do them justice, just like our favorite band, My point is that until you see them live, you have not really heard them.

My background is that I didn't like Yes at all, they bored the hell out of me and, yes, I thought they were soulless. Eventually I let a bandmate of mine drag me to one of their shows after listening to him go on about them for literally years. I went with no real expectations and was shocked to discover that they were in fact really good and had all of the things that I thought they didn't, and I had a great time. So, although they will never be as loved by me as the Dead, I found so much more to enjoy about them than I ever expected, that I am bothering to write about it here, in the hope that another might find more music to like.

It is a free country and you can, and should, do what you like...
