Willy Nelson wore a Grateful Dead t-shirt on a TV video of a concert performance back in the early nineties. Maybe for one of the Farm Aids or something. That was before Jerry died and the band called it quits.

There have been more "tribute" or "cover" stuff since '95. The Allman Brothers do Franklin's Tower now, but I am not sure if they were doing it when the Dead were still touring.

Bruce Hornsby still does some Dead from time to time, but maybe that doesn't quite count for this thread.

Last time I saw Gov't Mule was on Jerry's birthday and they did "Terrapin Station". Just the short part of the overall piece.

Saw the Dead Milkmen (of "Bitchin' Camaro" fame) play Cabaret Metro in 85 or so... a free pass iirc, can't think that I would pay, since I was never really a fan. I was a fan of several bands from the L.A. and San Fran hardcore punk scene of that era and saw most of them play the Metro over 85-86ish... Anyway DM did a parody version of Sugar Magnolia that cracked me up:

I also found a few interesting ones in there, like Jorma Kaukonen covering "Friend of the Devil" on one of his albums - Too Many Years, or Los Lobos covering "Bertha" on the Further Festival CD (1996). I just saw Los Lobos on the Crossroads 2007 DVD, and they rocked on their song Mas y Mas. would be cool to here them play Bertha.

I saw Los Lobos do Bertha on this tour. It was great. They did the song for Deadicated, the ultimate tribute cd to the Dead (where Burning Spear did Estimated) and since they were on the Further tour, them figured they'd do it. I think they played it at all the shows. Nice version. Also saw Cracker do Loser, Indigo's do Uncle John's and Elvis do Ship of fools/Roses/Ship of fools at Duke University many years ago. Elvis also read a poem before the song by Brautigan called "The Day they Busted The Grateful Dead". That was a great show!

In spring of 96, the ABB started to do Franklin's, TOO (instrumental/tease) and one other which I cannot remember. So, they began doing those tunes after Jerry died.

On Los Lobos' "Just Another Band from East LA" compilation they have a live Bertha which takes off from the one on Deadicated. Entire album is good.
