I was at the All Star Guitar Night at Summer Namm in June. Larry Carlton got a lifetime achievement award from Guitar player magazine.

They had a ton of great guitarists there one of them was Will Ray (http://www.willray.biz)

He said that Jerry was his greatest influence and gave praise to Jerry a number of times.

In Charlotte, late 80's early 90's, The Dead were playing a three night stand, and Buffett was playing across town for a couple nights at the same time. I had some friends who did not get in to the Dead so they (along with a few hundred others)went to see Buffett. Apparently he made a comment that all the fans at the show that night were not Parrot Heads, and perhaps some folks were lost, or got turned around and ended up on the wrong side of town, then he played Uncle John's Band.

So the story goes...

LOL, that was some funny shit!! I guess if you don't like that, you wouldn't like the old joke: Garcia and Clapton are on safari in Africa when they're separated from the group and captured by cannibals. Given a last request, Garcia says: "Please, give me a guitar and let me play one last long version of Truckin!" Then they turn to Clapton for his last request and he says: "Kill me first!" If we can't laugh at ourselves, it's just not fun.

Anyone remember the Pop-o-pies cover of Truckin? It's a classic, if you can find it!!

On the lighter side, I have seen many bands cover dead songs and speak highly (and poorly) of the Dead. Some that deserve mentioning:
I saw Patti Smith cover Dead songs, including Dark Star when she played the Fillmore and has always praised Jer.
Miles Davis, in his autobiography talks about what a great player Jerry was.
Dylan covers Dead tunes live and at one point asked to join the band (Phil said no).
