With all the buzz about the upcoming show and possible tour and everyone wondering who will fill in the Jerry spot it got me to thinking -
WHAT IF IT WAS YOU ?
How would you handle it ?
Your gear or theirs ?
Let them pick the tunes or would you want to call 'em ?
Would you just go with the flow or would you work up a game plan ?
I always wanted (still do )to jam with the Dead.
I would probably go with a "purist" mentality;real traditional.
Ya know Cold Rain --> Bertha openers,throw a Cassidy and Rooster for Bob,maybe a B.E.W,maybe Deal closer 1st set.
Get spacey in the 2nd set.

I dont think I ever played for more than 200 people tops.

Not to hijack this thread, but you guys got me thinking, if the band chose a newbie, like you or I, what kind of practical jokes(evil) do you think they would conspire to assault the victim with.

Like take a battery out of a stomp box, take a bulb out of an amp so it looks like its broke, or just a mega dose...of vitamins

I'd first have to get it in writing that Bobby wouldn't call any Walkin'/CC/Rooster-esque stuff.
Then you guys'd be hearin' alot of Pedal Steel solos.
I'd break out the 7-string electric for Help/Slip (and bunch of others) though.
My rig is ready to go.

Pedal steel would add a lot to the band and take pressure off the Jerry guy.
I really think most of the Jerry guys are weak on the behind the vocals type of playing and pedal steel stuff is real "vocal" in its sound....

I would do it in a heartbeat and have as much fun as I possibly could. I do whatever they asked me to do - even if it meant eating a 10 strip on my first night. I'd be up to the task. I KNOW there are MANY guitarists on THIS site alone that would do a way better job than me, but if asked - I'd say yes without batting an eye. I would imagine they'd supply the rig, but if not, I'd provide (I'd have to buy a new amp - again!).

If it were me, they'd still have to get a Jerry-singer, as I'm just not a Tenor.
I used to be able to sing some John Fogerty and Bob Segar stuff back in my 80's cover band years.
I can't imagine ever needing to sing a Segar tune again (well, maybe "Come To Papa"), but I still do a pretty good "Born On The Bayou".
I usually drop Jerry tunes by a 5th to get them centered in my vocal range. Or have the whole band drop-tune to Eb, ala Buck Owens.

TJ, I'm good to go on Around 'n Around.
They'd have to call out TS for Weather Report Suite, and St. o' Circumstance, though!
