I have two versions of this song (maybe a 3rd on a mix CD): 4/21/69 and 12/30/69- it's interesting how the main riff mutated or drifted a bit during that time.

Yeah, that studio version was supposed to appear on either American Beauty or Workingman's Dead. They felt that it didn't fit with the rest of either album, from what I've read.

I LOVE that studio version, Chuckles....it sounds just like it should from that era. Those 2 studio albums are perhaps the best they ever did, IMO and that version goes right w/ them (I think it would have been great on WMD).

Great song - fun 2 play. We've done it several times, much to the chagrin of Tour Pro.

Oh, hard to tell, TS....but I think it'd been okay on either album. That studio version isn't all tripped-out....but anyway - it's out there now and I dig that studio take!

No, you are right it's not that tripped out, but it has that psychedelic energy. In a way it's pre-trippy, somewhat reminiscent of the band's earliest original material like You Don't Have To Ask and No Time To Cry. Maybe it would have fit best on the debut album!

Gotta love Garcia's and Weir's guitar tracks on the studio version. Weir's tone is pretty interesting.

There is a fantastic version on one of the early Dicks Picks (maybe 4) from the great February 70 Fillmore East run.

I always thought the studio version of MC sounded a lot like Sugar Magnolia, especially Weir's tone and the harmony singing. Definitely sounds more AB than Workingman's to me. I think the song's weakness is the words - waggishly funny to be sure, but completely afield from the poetic powerhouses that inhabit the AB album. Certainly not one of Hunter's finest moments. Still, a fun song!

I love Henry Kaiser's cover of "Mason's". One of the best covers of GD ever imho.
