(Yes, I'm a Bob-fan but still couldn't pass that one up. I know Bobby is so freakin' talented and can play lead well but that that Jerry-eque way of building from a simple melody to complex melody to far out journey style)

There is no way on this earth that Bob is playing that. It is clearly Jerry, to my ears anyway. Unless I am missing something thats right in front of my nose that is quite clearly Jerry playing that solo and probably backing Bob up with some slide playing.

Come on, Bob was hardly special on slide was he? He did alright backing up on Stagger Lee off Shakedown Street but think Passanger and Cosmic Charley...big moments both played by Jerry. Jerry took the bulk of the (much more accessable and melodic) solo's when they did Little Red Rooster too.

I'd bet my house that is Jerry. Seems clear to me.

Ah, I see the confusion here:

The first solo section, after "you know she wish she would" is Jerry for two runs.

The second solo section after the "couple shots of whiskey" verse is 1)Brent's "fuzz-guitar" synth, followed by 2)Weir's slide, followed by 3) & 4)Jerry burning both of them to the ground for another two runs.

Tiger's right on. Being my first show I wasn't all that together about who was onstage. I sort of assumed it was someone joining them that I was unaware of after listening to it later when I was more "in the know", but could not find any info on it. Listening closely you can hear Brent drop out of and back into the rhythm on either side of the lead. You can clearly here Jerry and Bob so it's definitely not them.

My question would be did he play with this effect often? Cause if so, I haven't heard too much of it unless it's more about where he's playing it here and as such sticks out more.

Shoulda cranked that shit out a bit more often.

Yes, now I have listened to it again properly last night I agree with tiger.

I think it's the same with Alabama Getaway, the second solo sounds like Jerry but was often Brent. Perhaps a similar thing?

Jerry is on fire throughout this show. This was one of the '81 shows I was thinking of when singing the praises of the year on a different thread.

I have to admit that whatever Brent was doing in this Minglewood, along with that effect, had a particularly nasty way about it that came close to rivaling some of Jerry's nastiness.

So, in conclusion I'm not so sure I feel Jerry blew Brent (Bobby, definitely) out of the water. More like Jerry had the upper hand and could be seen holding Brents head under water and toyed with him, occasionally letting him up for air. Bobby, on the other hand could be seen off in the distance in the boat, keeping Jerry and Brents drinks sufficiently chilled. Now you Bobby fans relax. I'm just funnin.

but didnt jerry think it was best for keith to leave the band because he started to imitate his sound a bit?

but yeah, now that i listen to later 70's shows, you can tell that keith was a keyboarding echo of jerr.

Bob Weir was the one that suggested Brent, a member of Bobby & the Midnights, as the replacement for Keith.
