What did you think of the Acoustic sets the Dead did? Think 1970 and 1980 and the Reckoning album?

I wished they did more. Jerry once said Weir was uncomfortable doing them so they stopped. Shame.

There are also a few acoustic shows/sets in 1969, 1978, 1981 and 1994.

The acoustic sets are some of my favourite Dead stuff. Reckoning is my favourite album. Jerry on the acoustic was awesome.

I never read that about Weir--do you remember where you heard that?

I have it in a magazine interview from 84/85. If I can find it on-line I will link it on here. He was talking about the 1980 sets and why they stopped. Something about Bobby not being that happy with it so they stopped.

I love their acoustic sets, reckoning in particular. The Bird Song on that album is one of my favorites. I love the part where you hear Phil's bass come through heavy near the end of the jam.

It amazes me how much acoustic music has resulted from a band that rarely used the instrumentto perform themselves. In bars, coffee shops, etc. I often hear their music being covered on acoustic instruments.

Anyone know what model Takamine Jerry played for the 1980 sets or the cutaway model he played in his late 80's JGAB shows, and early 90's G/G?

i didnt know he played a takamine. i have one so that makes me very happy to hear. the "to lay me down" on reckoning is fantastic.

I love the acoustic sets. My favirote show from 1994 is acoustic and i loved reckoning. For me the good time acoustic sound of 1970 is my favirote. It always was a party, great stage banter and fine pickin and singing. Also my favirote side projects from jerry were his acoustic work with old and in the way and almost acoustic band with david nelson. IT's funny bobby didn't dig the acoustic sets in 1980 but every rat dog show has him playing acoustic for atleast 2 or 3 songs. Times change i guess.

Thinking about this more I am very surprised that Bobby was the nay-sayer. He was the one bringing in old country songs.

jerry and john khan acoustic shows rocked! how about that 85 catalyst club show? run for the roses, masterpiece, ruben & cherise are all standout! i copped alot of jerry's stuff from that show; deep elem blues and bird song in particular

Acoustic GD is definitely a must hear. Their music goes so well with the acoustic guitar as well as the electric. I used to have this dandy 1980 acoustic set that had my favorite Cassidy of all time.

Its listed as Phil Lesh and Friends, but the friends happen to be Jerry, Bobby, and Vince. Excellent sbd recording of an excellent acoustic show
