Hello, was wondering if any of you good people had experience with steel guitars. Basically my crappy little cover band would like to start doing some country tunes properly. I've got about $300. to get the job done. I have found some no name double neck lap steels for cheap on ebay. I can't afford a "real" pedal steel. My thinking is that a lap steel is a lap steel. Since there are no real "frets". Basically a set of strings>pick-up, set up to get the job done. Am I wrong on this???

You are definately correct! Forget the double neck though. Find yourself a lap steel in your price range and have fun...Just-Do-It! I have been having tons of fun with my lap steel a friend made for me. You can check it out at my myspace site on the tune KC Moan and in the pics.

I bought a crappy acoustic guitar at a garage sale, put a higher saddle and nut in, drilled some holes at the edges of the sound hole to mount a humbucker in it, drilled a hole in the body and wired a jack and it works great! Cost almost nothing

you could probly get even better deals on the bay or craigslist but those are pretty damn cheap and seem like they get the job done. let us know what you end up with
