One of my favourite aspects of music is how I can listen to a song dozens and dozens of times and I'll think it's a good song, nothing special. Good song worth hearing, kinda thing. Then, all of a sudden, something happens--a particular performance, the right "environment", etc. and the song all of a sudden clicks. It means something more--to get all icky and emotional, it connects with you and resonates much more deeply than before. It's then that a song starts to open up--it's sortof like those b&w pictures. You see a picture of a goblet or something and then all of a sudden, you blink, and then you see it's two faces.

Buckets of Rain (Dylan), just hit that point. I've listened to that album dozens and dozens of times. I was at Fur Peace Ranch last weekend and Happy Traum was there. He did a version of this song that blew me away. Now, the track from Blood On The Tracks is amazing and I can't stop listening to it.

Gotta love music.

Yea man, music is groovy like that...that sort of thing can happen with anything though. I used to dislike mustard very much then one day a year ago I put it on a sandwich and now I can't get enough of the stuff! So I guess life is the groovy thing.

A long time into listening to the Dead, never really cared for the tune "Passenger". then one day heard a rippin version and now its just as cool as any other dead tune.

Believe in or not, it was the same with "Saturday Night", now its one of my favorites.

agreed. music is magic. hearing and seeing a song performed live can really open your mind as to how the song works. some performers understand a song and how it works better than others, and it can also take time for a song to truly develop for a performer. i've seen weir display clear and potent mastery of songs like throwing stones (bob & rob days)with only his one guitar. that kind of stuff really impresses me too.

most of the songs i write are raw ideas and i have to figure them out by playing them solo, with other instruments(esp drums), recording and listening again and again before i really understand them and am able to start developing. it's that raw idea which is where the magic is. too much developing = too much thinking and not enough feeling. for me music is a mix of both, but feeling comes first.

fun84 wrote something like

i didnt like phish untill i heard dived sky

btw that isn't and exact quote but that song had SOOOOOOO....... much to do with my musical development, if you will i cant forget it

i know phish will never live up to what the dead did, and in the honest opnion of a huge phish fan, they never tried to do that, but you cannot deny the sheer musical quality of that peice

personally that is the first song that i spent over half of my life trying to perfect and i still can't get the half of it

as soon as i think i do i hear a new version and im back to the scrap book

peace nate

I never like mustard or horseraddish untill I had Webers Horseraddish mustard, now I like both.

I was just ricking out to "Radar Love" by Golden Earing, not quite hippy stuff, but I had a gas
I also just randomly fell in love with Dire Staights "Walk of Life" after not giving a damn about it for years.

Phish doesn't have to live up to the Grateful Dead, becuaue their not trying to be the Grateful Dead.
I think we should go a week without comparing anything or anybody to the Grateful Dead. See what kind of new conversations we can come up with

Phish is very different from the Grateful dead (thus changing the topic of this thread to a Phish vs. Dead arguement.)

its hard to compare the two.

Dare I say (gasp), Phish could go deeper into jams then the Dead could in their latter years. Phish also could cover more musical ground. However, I still like the Dead more.

Just my thoughts

i hate it when phish does "cartoonish" vocals. it just cuts me like a knife. theyve got some ridiculous good jams, but the vaccum cleaner bit.....with the trampolines....how is that entertainment?. ive known far too many people who thought that was the coolest thing ever . comparable to Page and his violin bow - what odacity!

It's cool because it's different, and no one else is doing it. But yes. Phish is quite ridiculous sometimes. I hear they're getting back together in a couple of years.

and the only way I find Phish to be similar to the Dead is they are both jam bands. Other than that, there is no comparison. you can't say one is better than the other.
