Once in a while I come across this and contemplate buying it, but have a hard time dropping that much dough for mostly studio versions I already have. Tell me the extras are worth it.

it contains every studio album since Blues for Allah with some extra tracks for each. Extras include a few things. There are studio outtakes and instrumental jams that would probably be difficult to find elsewhere, and some interesting in-progress version of songs (ie. Hollywood Cantata / TMNS). Dead Set and Reckoning have a whole extra disc of material each. There's some extra live versions, which are good if not exceptional. Some of my faves among the extras are Catfish John and California Earthquake.

Good question, unfortunately I don't have an answer. My version of this box set could be described as non-physical and non-commercial. I would hope the box has some cool literature and good documentation.

And to correct my post before, Wake and Mars Hotel are both older than Blues for Allah.

I have it, and the first one as well. The first boxed set is a favortie of mine, pretty much bought I with the intention of 'getting into' the dead (and look at where that took me!). Beyond description was bought to flush out my collection. Some of the bonus material is ok, especially the second disc of reckoning, but theres not anything that screams buy this for such and such.

I don't think it's essential unless you're a completeist or you really like this period dead.

I have an actuall physical, commercial copy and I highly reccomend picking it up. Well worth the $150 I paid for it.
