Guess I'm a bit late in responding to this, but I have some definite opinions. Truthfully, Mexican beer is average at best, but don't ever tell a Mexican that. They are truly convinced they have the best beer in the world.
As far as what you can get in the States, I'd go with the Negro Modelo. When drinking at the house, I tend toward Indio, a darker brew, but I don't think you can get it in the States. If in a bar and I want something a bit lighter, I drink Victoria. Again not available in the States. I also like Leon, a decent dark. My favorite though is Bohemia, I'm pretty sure it's available in the US. It's actually a got a real nice hoppy flavor, quite tasty. The problem is, is that the decent brands don't get exported. I would recommend avoiding Tecate...it's like fuckin Budweiser, and down here is looked on as a rather low class beer by alot of folks. "chela de albañil", sort of like saying it's what the poor low class laborers drink. I can't stand it myself. Avoid Corona or Sol, unless you're on the beach.
I'd agree with the tequila, but as was stated earlier, make sure it says that it's 100% Agave Azul (blue agave cactus). They aren't really 100%, but in order to make that claim they legally must have over 50%. Some good brands to try are Centenario (plata, which is white or reposado, which is aged), Herradura Blanco, Cuervo Tradicional or 1800 (quite a price differnce in between those two), or Corralejos. I like a brand called Siete Leguas (7 Leagues, the name of Pancho Villa's horse), which has a very earthy/smokey flavor, and of course Don Julio, which is probably the most famous top of the line brand down here. Honestly, I don't know if any are available in the US, but if you can find any of the above, they are worth trying. The brand that was mentioned earlier, Cazadores, is mediocre IMHO. Oh, and BTW, chilled shots are for pinche gringo turistas. Tequila should be SIPPED at room temp. Have a shot of lime juice or sangrita (spicy tomato juice) to accompany it,if you so desire, but chilled kills the flavor. Honestly.
Anyway, just my .02 on Mexican booze...........

Goin' home, goin' home
By the waterside I will rest my bones
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul
