Did jerry every play live on banjo with the dead. Or with the dead at all other that workingmans dead?

It's been a couple decades since I listened to the Dark Star on "What a Long Strange Trip...", but it seems I recall the last bars of that version have a faint Banjo on them. But then again a couple of decades ago I had a lot of things in my mind that really weren't there...

That is correct. I don't know for sure that that if Jer, but one would have to assume so. I am not aware of any other banjo stuff with the Dead.

I always wished he would have done this. I use to say this to friends all the time at shows. Woulda been cool.

Don't know if he played any of them live, but if you can find the rehearsal tapes from March 1987 with Dylan, there are some songs he plays banjo on.

The "banjo" on the DarkStar was a banjo lesson Jerry recorded for a student.
I read some where that he "threw it in there" as a joke.

I played banjo in the late 70's - early 80's for a few years. A friend had left one at my place and didn't come back to pick it up for like 4 years.
I was mostly into OAITW and typical BlueGrass tunes, Foggy Mt, RockyTop, FOTD, etc.
I picked up some chromatics, your basic banjo rolls, and played out at some jams and even a few gigs, but never really got better than an advanced beginner.
I see them on Craigslist fairly often and have been thinking of picking one up, mainly to keep my Jerry vibe going, as I already play guitar and pedal steel.

So anyway... I was listening to the Easy Wind (live version) on the end of the Workingmans Dead re-issue CD, and the intro sounds like it is played on a Banjo with a pickup on it.
Give it a listen:

Sounds just like a banjo on that Easy Wind. Yet he flows into some chords from the same sound that definitely wouldnt be done on a banjo. So I guess its just the recording/pickup selection. Maybe he's playing real close to the bridge?

Agreed.
I haven't listened to that whole show yet... maybe there are some other banjo clues.
I know a guy used to sit in with them on banjo and pedal steel named Pete Grant (maybe it was him?).
But the lick sounds like Jerry playing it to me, on Banjo.

I'd have to say not a banjo, as blob pointed out goes right into guitar riff and intro chords..
lots of attack on the notes...

I dont have this cd thingy you guys are talking about.
Any chance its guitar/banjo ?
A banjo with a guitar neck ?
Hard to mistake the melodious sounds of a banjo....
