I saw the version of "Unbroken" at the last show in Chicago and it was absolutley pathetic. I really don't think the GD ever did it justice live,(Jerry was just too far gone by then). Phil and friends had a live version they did a few years back (wish I could remember the date), and it was pretty damn good.

check out the Shoreline version (6/2/95?) - I really think it's the best one.

I was at the second Unbroken Chain 3-23-95. A friend told me in 92 that the Dead wouldn't play that song until their last tour.

There IS a tape in circulation of a soundcheck - I think from 1973 at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, maybe? - that has them working on Unbroken Chain. They play it part of the way through, stop so Phil can give Weir some grief about messing it up, and then play it all the way through. It's actually pretty well done, I'm surprised they never thought it was gig-worthy. Some pretty cool other stuff on that tape, as well - "30 Days in The Hole" being memorable. The tape is also a very clean sounding board copy, so it's a good listen.

I used to have a copy, but lost it along with most of the rest of my collection in my last move. In the process of trying to get things replaced, so I will hit my buddy up for a new copy of that one as well, and report back later.

Wow....Really??? I would love to hear that. I have a buddy who i met recently who has every show except about 8. So ill chat with him about it and maybe i can get it and circulate it.

My favorite unbroken chain is 4/16/99 at the warfeild... phil and friends with trey A and kimmock on guitar and page M on keys...its really nice.

My assumption is that it was just too much work to get down properly. The GD were not known for meticulous parctices ....when they did reherse, I think it was mostly newer songs before a tour.

I think it was just too complicated to get right. They only did it in 1995 at the insistence of Phil's young son Grahame. I have the Soldier Field version, and I wouldn't exactly call it pathetic. They don't exactly get it right, but they have a good go at it.

Compared to the original, It's pathetic IMO, but then again so was the whole show except for "SMR".
