Taste is subjective and that's what makes music great.
For ME, not having Cowboy tunes at a GD show would be lame. GOTTA have the mix up! PLUS, Jerry got to show off. He was a SERIOUS PICKER - not just a jammer. One of his strongest fortes was what he did during songs like Me & My Uncle and Mexicali and Big River and Cumberland Blues and El Paso and Mama Tried. PLUS their tightness of it...fantastic - all around bandwise, I mean...just fun, in general.
The Bobby thing is also a mystery to me. How someone can say the GD is all Jerry is beyond my comprehension. That's what JGB was for - BUT, even then - how are you gonna deny Melvin? Or Kahn? Or the girls?? Bob Weir is a SICK songwriter, a SICK rhythm guitarist and a great vocalist. Lazy Lightning, anyone?? Music Never Stopped?? Estimated Prophet?? There's a HUGE list of wonderful Weir music. And Garcia shone on all of it. The CHEESE, i.e.: Lovelight, Good Lovin', Around & Around, etc...ALL GOOD! A wonderful 'capper' to a great evening. Gotta have some downright, good ol' rock and roll, people.
The diversity of a setlist MADE a Dead show for me. If I went and the whole show was:
Eyes, Dark Star, Playin', UJB, The Eleven...etc., it'd be cool for a while...but keeping it fresh & diverse....that's the best for ME!
