Hi all. First post here. Just finished the McNally book, and he describes an incident from Berkeley Community Theater on the above date, where Brent stays on stage throughout the entire drumz and goes into a savage, tortured solo rendition of "Maybe You Know" in which he poured out his grief over his collapsing marriage to Lisa, prompting Garcia to come out help him finish the song and lead the band into GDTRFB, abandoning the usual Space altogether. I'm curious as to know if anyone has heard this and can add to Scrib's description (of course, no more Speeding Arrow to look it up ) I'd never even heard of the tune. Was it an original or cover? thanks

You can hear how it went down on the archive... I haven't listened yet cuz my computer is all fucked up and can't stream right now. Seems like a pretty intense thing... happens to most people at some point or another but not usually on stage. I feel bad for him and at the same time its his life and his choices.

brent had some issues for sure...too bad he didn't have better friends for support and to keep him out of the trouble he eventualy found himself in....

If I compare my reactions when hearing the "Brent" and the "Jerry" news, I almost think I took Brents harder, not sure why...

i have always been a big brent fan and i was way to young to ever see him live. I was 15 when jerry g died and only got to see them in 94 and 95 total of 3 times. But i have always studied brent and been very interested in him and his playing. He was a very troubled soul. Monster drug and alcohal problem and it showed in his playing.

Brents death was so unexpected and I guess we all knew Jerry was on borrowed time.
Brent was so much a part of the Deads sound that I only went to 2 or 3 shows with Vince - I didnt really dig the Vince sound at all or his jamming style.
Brent had a passion for music that I really enjoy.

This is so incredibly soulful, almost equivalent to the way Neil Young sounded in "Tonight’s The Night" in his drunken grieving for his roadie Bruce Barry.

I remember a few shows before this one ( http://www.archive.org/details/gd86-03- ... sbeok.shnf ) Jerry started Messing around with It Must Have Been The Roses, and Brent stormed of the stage, Bobby ran after him and physically brought him back to the stage. They ended up doing Tons Of Steel, then Roses. he was so down he didn’t even want to play.

Nice to hear a rare full band jam-out of Tons of Brent.

82-85, the band basically left Brent to himself to do it pre-drums. Bastards seemed to have finally come around to how a fragile soul he was and the support he needed.

Holy shit, that's a great Roses from that show.
