The answer is just about all of them of course... I couldn't possibly narrow it down to even a Top Ten, but if I had had a gun to my head (and there just happens to be one) and had to pick THREE that sort of encompass the scope of the appeal of live Grateful Dead music, it would be Dark Star('69-'73 personal pref), Other One('68-'90) and maybe... Sugar Magnolia (some HOT ones in 81-83 but always strong), and would be unable to resist the temptation to throw in a 1972 Truckin' for good measure.

I expect to see over a hundred song titles and 5x as many dates cited in this thread in short order... begin.

Yes, excellent can of worms post!

Already I can see that Tigerstrat and I have very different tastes in GD songs. I was never a big Dark Star fan, though it's OK, and I always hated the song Truckin'. Anyway, a few I really enjoy are:

Brokedown Palace
Sugaree
Ripple
Greatest Story Ever Told
Throwin' Stones
Stella Blue


A really good Estimated Prophet is always good too. I didn't list it above because I presently don't have a recording that I am partial to, so I wouldn't have a recommendation to back up the above if asked to. The version on Terrapin Station is good, if you like studio stuff.

Shakedown - 9/16/78 Egypt -Its slow and spacey.Like 1 1/2 drummers.Backing vocals are awful but turned down for the most part.
Not the best versions-just different.

Try 'Go to Heaven' a fabulous studio album with a nice cover of the boys in some beautiful tuxes.

I really can't even begin. Although 11/9/79 ( Buffalo , i think) has a great Franklins Tower. Not even a huge fan of that song, relatively speaking, but it is funky as hell. Especially the intro with Brent. I think its out of Dancin In the Streets

i always felt it was an honor to catch a show that pulled out a St. Stephen, Dark Star, Morning Dew, or Unbroken Chain. right now i'd gladly settle for another US Blues, Round n Round or Day Job.

If I had to pick one it would be Eyes of the World from 73-74.

One version that is rarely mentioned but deserved attention is 3-28-73. Any show that ends with: Weather Report Suite Prelude-> Dark Star-> Eyes Of The World-> Playin' In The Band, Johnny B. Goode is worth a listen, no?

As an afterthought I would have to add 10-12-68 for The Eleven.
Dark Star from Live/Dead and also how about 12-7-68 for another nice star.

There is just way too much to list. Generally, its about a show not so much a single song. And if you wanna go there, its more about a span of a few dates or a tour than a single show.
