Donna rocks.Always have loved her stuff with the Dead.
Do you know what kind of relationship she has (or doesn't have) with Dead ?
Over the summer my friends band brought Donna J. up to Philly to record some stuff and I sooo wanted to meet her.
Sigh.
But the studio had some kind of no freaks in the studio policy.
Love her in the Dead movie - what a hottie !

I am with TJ on this, always loved her...singing , met her up here Sept b4 last...very cool and TJ glad to see you are simmering down a little. My fav vocals , wake of the flood all the harmonies, but row jimmy and stella are outstanding.

I watched the first 2 mins or so of the YouTube that was attached to the end of that interview, and, keeping in mind that I really do like Donna's voice and think she really does have a lot of talent, that video is horrid. The only thing I can hear clearly is the keyboard player, who doesn't sound bad, but he is clearly trying to stay in the background. Donna Jean NEEDS to find a better clip to attach to that interview!

Not that it matters much to me, her schedule shows that she isn't coming within 1000 miles of me this year, and I doubt I like her enough to travel 1000 miles to see her perform even if she had the best YouTube clip on the planet attached.

I wish I could have given that interview. Some sample questions:

Me: So, Donna, how do you feel about the fact that many DeadHeads say that your horribly off-key catterwauling marred a fantastic era of GD concerts?

Me: Anyway, Donna, do you feel even the slightest bit ashamed that you have used your short affiliation (as a BACKUP singer) with the Dead to further your otherwise unspectacular career?

Me: So, Donna, do you actually believe that Donna Jean and the Tricksters in any way replicates or even does justice to the Dead's music? Or, like me, do you believe that you're cashing in on your short Dead "career" because former DeadHeads will do almost anything to see a former band member regardless of lack of talent or input?

Me: (from a friend) Do you have any original music to perform or do you just continue to make money ripping off a band that was better off without you?

Me: Do you have any plans to ruin any upcoming Zero shows or have you decided that you'll give Kimock fans a break from your torturing-a-small-kitty-with-a-rusty-chainsaw voice?

Me: Would you say that your vocals more closely resemble Roseanne Barr singing the National Anthem or Yoko Ono singing anything?

Me: Is it possible for you to clear some space on your calender for a trip to Guantanamo? If waterboarding doesn't get them to talk your singing just might.

Me:(actually this question comes from a longtime listener) What do I say to my daughter when she asks incredulously "What IS that" after hearing you sing?

Me: If a poll was conducted asking which member of the band contributed the least would you be surprised to receive 99% of the vote?

Me: (via email) Why are you the only backup singer in the world to feel the need to say "Goodnight" to the crowd for the band?

Me: Why do you think that you and Keith were the only members of the Dead to ever be asked to leave the band?

Me: How do you explain the following review from ClassicBands.Com: "Although Keith and Donna Godchaux had been with the band for several years, they had never truly fit in. Donna often sang off-key, resulting in some embarrassing live performances"?

Haha, nice one Sluggo. I've never been a fan of her vocals for the most part...she was on sometimes though. I really liked Keith as a piano man for the band, I don't see why many people don't like his playing. He didn't always shine, but when he did the music was great!

I have to say.....I got a pretty good chuckle reading some of those. I don't know that I feel as strongly as Sluggo, but there are definately some valid points there, and Sluggo is definately not alone in his opinion.

One thing though. Was Donna actually asked to leave? I thought the deal was that Keith's H use had gotten so bad and had so strongly affected his playing that HE was invited to pursue other endeavors, and it was just natural that Donna would go as well.

Do your homewrork butch! For starters, Bob Weir was asked to leave the band! Secondly, DJ and the Tricksters have new material they wrote together, they only perform a handful of GD material, and lastly, Donna Jeans era with the Dead coincided with a "little" electronic experiment called, um, ah DUH... The Wall OF SOUND! You try harmonizing over that monster! Your obviously not a musician. that's apparent from you ignorant post.

I have a question for you sluggo, if I pour salt on you, will you shrivel up and crawl away and not post your idiotic thoughts here anymore?

sluggo that's rough. however i did hear one scarlet begonias, i think maybe in egypt, with vocals so bad yoko ono would blush. i have heard her sound good a few times but i think sluggo has some valid points

mmmh well, first of all I have to say that I liked Donna during her time with the Dead, apart from the moments when you really have to say she's far off key I think the band's sound was warm and vintage and real with her and Keith.
Apart from that I found sluggos comment very funny and I don't think that he was dead serious about it =)
