I have the boss flanger and the boss phase shifter, i realize they are different but to me the sort of sound the same.

could anyone tell me why they are different and how to properly use each respectively?

Flangers, Choruses and Phasers are all basically the same electronically. The differences are that chorus is usually more subtle and contrasted with an unaffected, "dry" signal. Phasers tend to be wide and slow and dreamy, and flangers tend to be more in your face, and modulate faster.
