Box - The move your wife made is pretty much what I plan on doing, only a bit sooner. Got 1.5 years in now, trying to get my MBA/CPA and get the hell out into the private sector with a decent salary, ASAP. This is a means to an end, I'm not looking in anyway to become a partner, or even a manager at this point.
I work for a firm that has alot of our clients in the non-profit sector, so tax season doesn't suck as bad as it could, but with do get hit in the fall because thats when all the non-profits wrap up. So 60 is really my max, I hit 70 once in November.
I look at people with kids at the firm and I'm like 'How do you do this with a family??" I'm still young, single, have only a handfull of friends and live with my folks; and its still a huge time drain.
