I wish there was a way to know how many different songs the dead played in a single year. Especially the first year and how they progressed.

How many tunes did your band know the first year? I think we were around 40. When you guys practice do you play a lot of the same tunes over and over, like every time you guys get together?

just curious how others bands practice.

I found it 6 different in 65. 55 in 66, 34 in 67, 32 in 68. 77 in 69 and 106 in 1970. interesting.

theCAUSE practices once a week, we know ahead of practice what our setlist for the next gig looks like, so we are able to (hopefully) work on the tunes before practice, then rehearse the tunes at practice, work on harmonies, arrangements, dynamics etc...We usually practice for 2 hours and get in about 8-12 songs. We have played 199 different tunes so far during the 4 years we've been together(see our tunes page on our website). When we first got together we prob could have played 30 tunes from the start, the drummer and keys were in Left for dead, and the guitarist in Double Dose both long time dead cover bands, and I have been playing GD tunes forever, although I have learned so many more since being part of this band. Although learning tunes and being able to jam tunes is very different. We have really learned to listen to each other and play off each other and most importantly not afraid to explore the tunes and take them down roads we never expected, even in non-big jam tunes, songs like Big River or Minglewood have rocked in ways you might never expect. We also our very proud of being confident in playing softly, we can get to a whisper then rock the walls, never underestimate the power of wide dynamics in a tune, it is very easy to play loud, not so easy to play quietly.

hope that helps

Deadbase VI (65-91) has several features that some of the other editions do not, and one is breakdown of songs/shows by year. 1987 is the champion (tipped by Dylan no doubt): 148 different songs.

Yeah, funny though....I still yearn for even broader horizons....I want more originals and more music that would normally not be heard from a predominantly GD cover band, that would still be really cool. I tried to get the boys to do a song ("Funky On My Back") from the band Cold Blood. Not too many people have ever heard of them, but I think the song could be REALLY tripped out by us. Keyboardist nixed it (he can be a bit fussy! hahaha!!! so can I , I guess  ).
