I'd mail it, use DHL, and insure it, that's the safest way to go. A friend of mine had 2 acoustics sent out to him, both very nice guitars, did it that way. Things you check on board a plane are not insured and they are not liable for any damage! You must insure!!! Don't waste all that money you spent on a nice guitar by being cheap about how you send it.

I got my guitar put in the back of the plain were they do all the food stuff. They were really nice about it.
These all seem like they might work, but Im really starting to think I just might as well just take it apart and pack it with my checked baggage, just in case the worst case scenario does arise and I have to gate check a $1,000 guitar in a soft gig bag. I mean Im sure that will help with the neck tension issue from the huge change in climate and pressure. No?
I think taking it apart isn't necessarily a bad idea. If you've never done it before it's kind of cool to really see how it's put together and all the little construction marks and things. Especially if you are going to have a setup done anyway.
I'm sort of in the same boat: my wife booked us a trip to Mexico for my birthday (leaving today!) and I can't imagine going five days without a guitar. I went to my local guitar shop to see about a flight case, but they didn't have one that locked.
Not meaning to sound like JP Morgan or anything, but exactly what good is a flight case that doesn't lock? All of my guitars are $1000 or more. I'm going to fly to Mexico with an unlocked case? 
I didn't want to chance trying to carry on a full size HSC (though, having read this thread now, I might have reconsidered), so I picked up one of these:

Yeah, Ive done this sort of thing before. Im the type that really tinkers with stuff. Back when I had a 80's era strat I had that thing taken totally apart, bridge and all. Im sure I wont have a problem and that way I dont even have to worry about the possibility of running into someone having a bad day and not being able to get my guitar aboard.
