I think taking it apart isn't necessarily a bad idea. If you've never done it before it's kind of cool to really see how it's put together and all the little construction marks and things. Especially if you are going to have a setup done anyway.
I'm sort of in the same boat: my wife booked us a trip to Mexico for my birthday (leaving today!) and I can't imagine going five days without a guitar. I went to my local guitar shop to see about a flight case, but they didn't have one that locked.

Not meaning to sound like JP Morgan or anything, but exactly what good is a flight case that doesn't lock? All of my guitars are $1000 or more. I'm going to fly to Mexico with an unlocked case?
