no order: jerry garcia, jimi hendrix, tony rice, john scofield, jimmy herring, bob wier, david gilmour, jimmy page, trey anastasio, carlos santana

jimmy herring played one of the best shows I have ever seen on new years eve (12/31/2007). I was getting goosebumps the whole time, its was crazy.

Not in any order and there are more that would fit into my top ten on another day:

Garcia, Weir, Rory Gallagher, Jorma Kaukonen, Tal Farlow, Ed Bickert, Johnny Smith, Django Reinhardt, Jeff Beck, Bill Ebert (my old guitar teacher).

In no order...

Jerry Garcia, Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, Bobby Weir, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Dweezil Zappa, Trey Anastasio, Robben Ford, Joe Satriani.

Honorable Mention: Carlos Santana, Albert Lee.

Now, this isn't the list of GREATEST GUITAR PLAYERS of all time, as in technical, etc...this is the list of my FAVORITE GUITAR PLAYERS of all time.
:D

More innovative? I'll have to disagree with you. Chet is a PHENOM, of course, but - like Jimi - he just "stretched" what was around him. BUT, Jimi was flooring everyone around him with what he was doing w/ his innovative ways on using fuzz, distortion, whammy bars, finger tapping, etc. Players like Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, Jimmy Page, George Harrison - all the heavy hitters (in the rock world) from the mid-60s....they ALL took stuff from Jimi. Again, Chet - sickleberry. Jimi - I'd say just a bit higher on the sickleberry scale.

I just caught my first Tommy Emmanuele shows...
He played my place last week for 2 nights in a row....
No way to describe what he does on an acoustic guitar...He is freaking amazing.....look him up on You tube...it still won't do him justice....if he comes to your area you owe it to yourself to see him

by the way....Johnny Winter returns to my place next week if any of you are in the area....
check out orangeblossomjunction.com for info...

really? you would put howser instead of herring? why...

it seems like herring is bringing some crazy energy and amazing licks to the band, while howser just kinda flowed with the band...

I love George Harrison. Great tone (360/12 and AC30 are a nice match for sure), great songwriter, etc. Also has spirit and soul. But I'm surprised to find him on so many top-ten lists of guitarists! Are you all digging the slide guitar? Again, I'm a George guy too, so what is it that you all like about George's guitar work? Just curious.
