This is, of course, an iconic song and anyone around when this was first being played on the radio knows that it was as 'alternative' for it's time as anything since. And that keening guitar solo leapt out of the speaks.
However it's always an eye opener when I hear this song done live that Jerry never seems to get through this solo (IMHO) smoothly and confidently end to end.
There is always a alternate second part that doesn't quite work like the one on the recording. I don't play this song and maybe there is a position shift or some other physical problem that makes it hard, maybe someone can speak to this, but my main question would be 'Is there a great version of this song including the solo? And I have the '71 Hollywood Bowl BTW.

Well, 1st Bob does his Solo and then Jerry does his.
Jerry seemed to avoid the album solo for the most part.Always playing stuff different.If I was to do this song I would want to do it the album way 'cause it is so iconic.
I dont like the the live early versions of this song.A mess.Once it got worked up good it got better.Even better with Brent and his great vocals.I just shut down my Itunes so I got nothing for ya.Sorry.

Theres plenty of great Casey solos. One of the solos that comes to mind which I have tabbed on this site under Casey Jones is from closing of winterland 12-31-78. He plays it smooth end to end.

Thanks guys for responding, I looked for 12-31-78 on speeding arrow, no dice; it must be an official release(!?)
I guess 'Eyes' is the only song that will get a bunch of responses!
Still would like to get some examples to hear.

I'm partial to the 9/27/72 version on DP11 not sure if it fits the criteria though it is similar to the studio version. Jerry's smooth and Keys are nice on this one also.

My work denies YouTube. It's just another of those things I read on here that makes me wish for things just out of my grasp (read nugs). Oh well..
Don't get me wrong, one of the things that makes me a Dead head is that I like the improvised solos and parts.

Love live versions of this song. NYE Winterland is GREAT. I was at the breakout in '92(?) at RFK, when the drummers came out with the big ol' train horns!! Sickleberry!! When WE (theCAUSE) plays it live, we do a keyboard solo first, and I play the Bob solo behind the key solo, then I do a variant of the Jerry studio solo...I stray a bit from it, but stay close. There's a version on our website now, if you wanna check it out... www.theCAUSEjams.com . You have to flip through (or listen to) Throwin' Stones, Doin' That (Bluegrass) Rag, Mason's Children, Stella Blue & Loser, before you get to it, if I'm not mistaken.

Actually I have heard your Throwing Stones and Mason's Children from other posts. The Casey Jones is very good as well. And your solo is great. I like the keys and the vocalists too. If I lived there I'd come down to hear you for sure.
You hit that jump to the high note at 2:27 during the second pass on the solo. And that is the interval I'm talking about. And the decending line after that. Some of the Caseys I hear aren't, for lack of a better word, as committed to that line and there is some variation. Thanks guys.
