I was listening to the 6-26-74 China>Rider today and recognized near the end of the transition, a "jam" tune I've noted before in other places. It reminds me a bit of the Uncle Johns Band progression in both timing and structure.

Does this jam have a pet name?

Also, I know I've heard it used a few times, but I can't think of where off the top of my head. Was it exclusively for the China>Rider transition or can you identify other places/shows where they used it?

I don't know what they call it, but it's in the Grateful Dead Movie for one.

Ok, I'm answering my own question here. After a quick check of another classic, same period C>R I think this jam was used specifically to punctuate the transition. I just listened to the C>R of 11-14-73.

I'd still like to know if it shows up anywhere else, or whether it has a name. thanks

Feelin Groovy jam, UJB jam. and I know ive seen one or two more than that.

This jam was commonly played in the C>R's of 72-74, and to my mind sounds nothing at all like "Feelin Groovy" (or more properly "59th St. Bridge Song"), and MUCH more akin to the UJB main theme.

How do SO many people come up with "Feelin Groovy" to describe this interlude? Try singing the lyrics with it: "Hello lamp post, whatcha knowing?..." or "Da na na na na..." where is the similarity?... wtf?

If thats the one you mean, I agree that it has very little to do with the Simon and Garfunkel song. Makes one wonder where the name came from. I can only offer one explanation: it makes me feel groovy

Yesindeedeedoodlydoo....the GD (or at least the folks at DeadBase) called it "59th St. Bridge Song Jam". And I could not agree more with you guys - I know that song like the back of my hand ( Hey! What's that?! I've never seen that before...) and it sounds nothing like that song. Great little kick in the middle of what were some BLISTERING China > Riders.

Always liked that jam.

Feelin' Groovy Jam is what I've heard it called. I'm guessing thats because of how it makes you feel; makes you wanna boogie. There are many great examples of this jam in China>Rider from 73-74 I believe. I have also heard this jam in Dark Stars from 69 onwards. Unfortunately I have not recorded which dates they were on.

Anyone know any DS w/Feelin' Groovy Jams?

BTW, listening to 6-26-1973 and it has a very nice if short transition. The transition jam got juicer and juicier as the Wall of Sound era progressed. There probably arent many versions I wouldn't enjoy

I just found what sounds like a precursor to an all-out Feelin' Groovey jam in an earlier Dark Star.

It's from a 1-2-70 Fillmore East show. The DS clocks in at a bit over 29 minutes. They hit this jam at about the 20 minute mark. At the 23 minutes mark they're at a mellow two chord vamp that I've heard in other places too (sounds like at least one maj7 chord, but I haven't spent the time to confirm the chords).

As far as this Feelin' Groovey jam, it sounds like early stages of development and not fully developed. To my ears, it sounds like both Jer and Phil are the ones responsible for the progression and direction (what else is new?).
