for like a year(s) at a time? lol. seriously in most pictures from these years you see him wearing the same thing

71- denim up and down (canadian tuxedo)
85- red tee
87 - flanel over black tee
91 - see the blue tee a lot
94-95 - purple tee

black tee shirt was definitely the most common you see him wear that throughout the 70s and 80s

I read somewhere that he had terrible hygiene, and if that were the case I could see him not only wearing the same wardrobe, but also the actual same clothes as the day before, perhaps for days, weeks, on end.

That is one thing I always liked about him. He didn't seem to give a fuck about his appearance. I'm the same way, but I like to be clean. Most junkies I know don't bathe that often as it is supposed to help the high.

Totally man, I so have the Jerry wardrobe. I take it a step above though, I dont wear sweats. I usually go with some baggy khakis.

But just plain old one colored tee's everyday. Change the colors up a bit and thats it. I just love that "dont give a fuck" attitude towards appearance.

I dug the Garcia look of the mid-seventies with the Blue jeans and leather jacket, and cowboy boots.

doesn't everyone wear sweat pants and a black tee???

I was actually at a few show where Jerry wore shorts (it was blinding)

I do dig the "don't give a fuck" attitude to appearance, but when you're not changing for weeks on end, probably not showering, its a big problem. He obviously just wasn't a very healthy person at all and paid the price and the drugs certainly played a role. I mean, when you're 50 some odd years old and you look like you're 70, something's up.

I never cut my hair but I do like to shower.

I never understood the "dont give a f%^& wardrobe". The hippies of the old days did not give a hoot becasue they actually did not have a shower or were actually traveling from place to place and were set on living off the land or just too involved with drugs that appearence and showering dont matter. But i never understood trying hard at emulating garcias clothes or not showering. I always said to myself if your trying to dress like someone or dress in certain way "the dont give a F^&* appearence" then you care, in fact you care a lot about it. What i am saying is you actually care about your appearence, just like a movie star or a rockstar cares about his appearence.

I dont think garcia cared as was said earlier because he had a very bad drug problem and when your taking alot of drugs and depressed as garcia was you dont care about yourself, how you effect other people, and your appearence.

I guess i am just saying we should not call it the "I dont Give a F$%^ appearence becasuse in reality you care a lot.

I care about my appearance to an extent, I have to admit that. I don't wear obviously dirty clothes, but I have no problem wearing a shirt two days in a row if it's not dirty.

I wear clothing to protect my body from the elements, not to impress people.

I agree that making an effort to dress in such a way as to convey an "I don't give a crap about appearance" is a self-contradiction. I think a better way to describe it is that I, like some of you apparently, prefer to dress in very plain clothes. Basic looking jeans and single solid color t-shirts being the norm. Plain grey or black sweatshirts when it is cold, plain looking shorts when it is hot. It isn't so much of a lack of care as it is a desire to not draw attention to myself because of what I am wearing. I usually shower at least once a day though, and make an effort not to offend with body odors, but I don't go overboard there either.

Not as blinding as Phil's pasty legs on that View from the Vault.

85 was the pinnacle (imo) of his total not bathing, candy eatin, tar smoking deterioration. The phrase "trouble ahead, Jerry in red" didn't come from nowhere...lol

On a total side note, I had this buddy in college, who was a pretty big hippe (we all were, but he was the lay arround in the same clothes type). One day we were all hanging out and he really smelt rank, and we called him out on it (it was really hard to stand). So he went to take a shower, and honest to god this guy gets up, goes to the shower (no towel or soap, anything), comes back like, no more than five minutes later, soaking wet, and in the same clothes he went in with.

Same kid used to sit in the front row so he could strech is legs out when he slept.

Was his name Spicoli?

The impression I get from Jerry is that he just didn't really get the fashion thing. I gravitated to the solid color T and loose jeans or kacky before I even knew who Jerry was or tried a drug. But drugs do cause this it seems and Jerry's fashion and appearance seem to decline once he starts heroin in 77, 4-5 years later he has aged 10-15 years, put on weight, teeth started to rot... Don't do heroin!
